Early September I arrive BKK then off to Lopburi.

Last time in Bangkok was 1963.

A modest Thai lady will meet me at the airport.

I need a quiet safe clean place for maybe 2 days.

I will have expensive camera & laptop with me.

5 Star type things are not my style.

I'm pretty much low budget.

I'd appreciate some feedback.

Since its 2016 and not 1963 you may wish to try one of the numerous hotel search sites available.

Some even have pictures and pretty videos of the hotel as well as guest reviews.

Agree with Stoneboy, take a look at Agoda.com or Booking.com. It will give you a general idea about hotels in Bangkok.

Bangkok is a very large city so try to narrow it down to a district or maybe close by where you may want to go to.

A hotel in the vicinity of the sky-train (BTS) will give you easy acces to the rest of the city.

I used King Park Hotel at Seacon Square   a  few times although some  of the websites slate it Ive always found it ok and it holds fond memories of the first days of  knowing my Wife (10 years ago) which is probably why. Its not expensive and close to Seacon for good shops and local markets

OP: what do you want to do while you are in Bangkok?  See the sights?  Just relax?  What's your budget?

As suggested, your best bet is to use agoda, booking.com, hotels.com, tripadvisor, etc, to look for a place in an area you like.  You can put in price ranges and see what others say about the property.  It's the best way to go...

I used trip advisor.
I really expected prices to be lower than Patong of Kamala.
I'm used to paying around 500 baht.
Very satisfied with what I get.
Guess it's back to 190 and grasshoppers.
I was hoping you guys had a secret really super hotel cheap.

On my stopover in Bangkok I regularly use Prom Ratchada, a reasonable quality and price, but it's greatest asset is that it's next to a Big C, handy for cheap food and the area has eateries of various size and style to suit your wallet and/or tastes.
