OA visa extension outcome

Featured Replies

Went and did my first extension of my OA visa based on retirement today. Went with no expectations apart from the normal run around I get here doing even simple things like vehicle transfers but was actually all done in 10 mins! Well I took a ticket and filled in the paperwork for 45 mins waiting for my turn but was actually 10 mins at the counter.

I actually have a foreign currency account at Bangkok bank and the required sum (900k THB +) for over 2 months. I updated my book this morning and noted the bank book only shows an amount, doesn't show what currency it is (AUS$). I updated my book and I thought it would give me a balance at todays date but only updates when there's a transaction made and my last transaction was a month ago. So the book wasn't  lot of use. I also got a letter off the bank stating the amount I had in AUS$ and for how long. No exchange rate showing THB value. They told me they couldn't do that anymore as their system had changed 2 months ago! After a bit of negotiation the girl went away and typed in todays ex rate. So I got a letter which basically showed the amount I had today in AUS$ and the ex rate today in Thai baht. But nothing really saying that I had the required amount in the bank everyday for the last few months or that the value in AUS $ I had deposited was over 800k THB every day for the last few months. In hindsight I should have made a transaction this morning. I wasn't confident.

So I filled out all the forms. Wasn't even really confident about that as there are some ambiguous fields there and I left a few things unanswered, planned to ask the officer.

I think I might have been lucky it was 10 minutes until lunchtime. Anyway the first thing she wasn't happy with was the bank info of course, but told my missus she'd let it slip this time. I had a copy of my lease but she said next time she wants a signed copy of the owners Tabien bahn and his ID. Again no problem this time. Other issue was she said I should have had the money in the bank for three months not two. That wasn't correct as it was my first extension (cash in bank 2 months) but didn't need to argue the point as she also said she'd let that slide. Anyway, she flicked through everything quickly....stamp stamp.....1900 baht and all done. I couldn't believe it! I've read so many horror stories here of people being short 2 baht on their deposit or a day short of three months and got knocked back thought I'd post a positive story :-)

Khon Kaen immigration is not that bad.

Other places are notorious for nitpicking.

No idea whether the office is still directed by the female captain(?).

She was always helpful in case of a bureaucratic problem.
