Cambodian Embassy Guard in Malaysia Fired

Featured Replies

A security guard at Cambodia’s embassy in Malaysia was fired on Sunday after trying to extort money from a female worker in exchange for her return to the Kingdom, according to an announcement by Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhon on Monday. The 70-year-old security guard, Atam Rosate, was fired after the woman reported him to officials last week, the announcement said, quoting an embassy report. The Cambodian man had worked at the embassy for two years.

However, it was not the security guard’s first attempt at extortion. “Embassy officials warned him once last year for illegally asking for money from a Cambodian worker in Malaysia too,” the report added.

The female worker who requested help from the embassy, Khloy Mony from Kandal province’s Sa Ang district, has been staying at the Cambodian embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Officials promised to send her home soon. “The embassy will arrange legal documents to send her home to Cambodia next week,” the announcement said.
