Ministry of Tourism sees more visitors from Russia, Kasakhstan; optimistic for Mothers Day spending

BANGKOK, 10 August 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has projected 20 billion baht will circulate during the upcoming Mothers Day holiday and pointed out Russian and Kazakhstani visitors are showing an uptrend.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul let on that Russian and Kazakhstani tourists numbers to Thailand have been rising and are expected to continue to increase due to the success of the ministry’s 12 must-see cities campaign. The ministry has also added more Kazakhstani tour guides to lesser known provinces to expand tourism income.

For this coming Mothers Day, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has organized a program to encourage people to take their mothers traveling and expects 21 billion baht to be generated by the holiday; 3 billion from domestic tourists and over 17 billion from foreign tourists. So far this year, 20 million travelers have visited the country and generated 100 billion baht in income for the nation. The numbers are up 11.79 and 15.89 percent respectively year-on-year.

just to add a little.we hope they are quality tourists.

Does the esteemed Minister not realise that it's only Mothers' Day in Thailand and not elsewhere in the world? So any foreign spending has absolutely nothing to do with the Queen's birthday holiday.

the world is a stage for tourism now days. sure the tourists will be attracted to destinations with natural local sights and other related infrastructure to be able to take these in. value for money for money destinations draw tourists who must be given fair deal in the host country.

Sim or chipto be implanted into each tourist D or P??

"...The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has ... pointed out Russian and Kazakhstani visitors are showing an uptrend..."

The games people play ...

The "official" TAT figures (http://www.tourism.go.th/home/listcontent/11/221/276) show that Russian visitors in 2014 totalled 1.6 million ( 0.9 million for the period January - June 2014) . In 2015, they totalled 0.9 million for the year ( 0.5 million for the period January - June 2015) . In the period January - June 2016 they totalled 0.6 million. An uptrend yes, but hardly something to get excited about.

As for the Kazakhs, well in TAT's official data, they are not reported as a separate entity - instead they are just grouped in the "Others"  in the European visitors - which is showing a modest uptrend!

Regarding the claim that, so far this year, 20 million travellers have visited the country - to be polite, I'll say it's a projection! The latest figures from TAT are up to June! The figures for the period January - June 2016 are actually 16.6 million visitors - still an impressive figure (but, well short of the 20 mil).

As for TAT's claim that it expects ฿21 billion to be generated by the Mothers Day holiday (฿3 billion from domestic tourists and over ฿17 billion from foreign tourists), well those figures (if anywhere close to reality for a three-day period) are just too embarrassing for the "big-spending" Thais!

I work in Kaz, so, on a 6 week on, 2 week off I count as 6 Kazakh visitors per year.

Yep, I can see the upturn    :D

Fudge, fudge and more fudged figures. The best way for TAT to predict tourism is to invent it.

I'm so relieved as I was worried that Minister Popcorn wouldn't take the opportunity to pull imaginary spending figures out of thin air.
