BANGKOK: -- The National Human Rights Commission will submit an urgent letter to Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra asking him to put on hold the ongoing eviction of the remaining residents at the Mahakarn fort, according to an informed source close to the NHRC.

The NHRC will also urge the City Hall to stop giving reports to the media about the defiant community residents until there is a clear resolution to the conflict between the city administration and the residents.

It was reported that the NRRC planned to invite representatives from relevant agencies namely the Fine Arts and Treasury departments and the Crown Property Bureau to work out a solution to the conflict.

Mr Sakchai Boonma, a senior official of the City Hall’s civil works office, complained that the city administration has now become a defendant of the society despite the fact that it merely performed it duty.

He said that most of the households at the Mahakarn community had received compensation and removal fees from the City Hall with the rest – the minority – still refuse to move out although several of them have received the compensation.

He also said that those who proposed amendment of a Royal decree in order to allow the defiant residents to stay on must be able to clarify to the city administration about why the remaining students should stay on.
