BANGKOK: -- State enterprises have been told by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak to speed up disbursement of the remaining investment budgets during the third quarter in order to keep the economic engine expanding continuously.

Dr Somkid chaired a meeting Wednesday to follow up and accelerate the disbursement of investment budgets of 45 states enterprises which altogether have a combined 304 billion baht investment budget for 2016 fiscal year.

Mr Aekniti Nititunprapas, director of Office of State Enterprise Policy Committee, told the meeting that all the state enterprises have already disbursed a combined total of 131 billion baht or 79 percent of the entire budget.

It has been expected that, by the end of July, 95 percent of the investment budget would have been disbursed.

Mr Aekniti said he would invite representatives of 17 state enterprises which have a combined investment budget amounting to 289 billion baht for mega projects for discussion to speed up disbursement of the remaining budget.

At the meeting, Finance Minister Apisak Tantiworawong recommended the Office of State Enterprise Policy Committee to discuss with the National Economic and Social Development Board about the investment plans of state enterprises for the next fiscal year.

So with less than two months remaining in the fiscal year, about one-fifth of the total FY 2016 budget needs to be disbursed. That seems reckless, fraught with potential mismanagement and might better be applied to the national debt.
