Flood wall collapses after massive run-off

NAN, 18 August 2016 (NNT) – A massive run-off led by torrential rains has collapsed a flood wall in the northern province of Nan. Workers are struggling finish repairs to the dike, as another downpour is expected.

The water levels in the Nan River peaked at 8.3 meter on August 15th. The heavy flow eroded the riverbanks, causing a 20-meter section of the concrete flood wall to collapse. The dike and the nearby area have been fenced off as a safety precaution.

Nan City Mayor Surapol Thiensut said civil workers fixed the damaged section with sand bags as a temporary solution. The flood wall will then be reinforced with gabions to better deal with the monsoon, which will continue until late August.

Just seen the photo. I was expecting something more... Hollywood. You know, teams of gallant men, half drowned, struggling to hold back torrents of water gashing past them while pretty girls stood back in the distance shouting encouragement like "Somchai I love you! But we've only 14 hours to save the village!"

(Ahh Flash...)
