Phitsanulok and Sukhothai safe from flood – for now

BANGKOK: --- Phitsanulok and Sukhothai provinces are, for now, safe from flood as northern runoffs have flowed into Bang Rakam district of Phitsanulok which is the point where the “old” Yom river merges with the “new” Yom river.

Mr Chamnan Chuthiang, director of Yom-Nan irrigation project, said on Sunday that, as of midnight Saturday night, the runoffs estimated at between 150-180 cubic metres per second had subsided and the critical situation was over, for now.

There was no damage to farmland as the runoffs had flowed into Bang Rakam district and into natural klongs where officials had earlier drained out water so they would be able to absorb the runoffs, said Mr Chamnan, adding irrigation officials have not stored this water mass because more runoffs are expected this month and next before the end of the rainy season.

Only about 10 houses located by the riverside in Tambon Tha Chang, Phrom Phiram district of Phitsanulok were temporarily flooded but the water level has eventually subsided by 70 cm after the water mass had flowed into Bang Rakam district before flowing downstream into Phichit province.

Although water level at Bang Kaeo sluice gate has risen by about one metre, irrigation officials said that the Yom river at this point can still hold more water by another three metres high.
