BANGKOK: -- Fifty cops in Bangkok have been selected as Pokémon Go enforcers as the met police get tough with drivers playing the game.

Commissioner Sanit Mahathavorn said Monday was the day when the force would start getting serious with offenders - as police were pictured with yellow balloons preparing to get out there on the mean streets of the capital!

The Pokémon enforcers will be split up into special patrols to stop the augmented reality game players on ten selected "danger spot" roads in the city, reported Sanook.

Drivers will be nabbed using mobile phone video capture capabilities - and could face 1000 baht fines under regulations forbidding mobile phone use while driving.

So far officers had conducted a "softly-softly" approach but from Monday they were getting serious.

Official figures showed that in the period from 10th to 20th August 243 people were stopped for using their phones while driving - and police said most of these were playing Pokémon Go.

Shouldn't all the police be stopping drivers who use their phone and not just a select 50?

They just don't see it do they

nobody should be using a mobile phone when driving, it is a primary cause of accidents in Thailand, it has nothing to do with pokmon it is about enforcing already existing laws that ban the use of a mobile device when driving, the stupidity in this country is shocking, one of the worst (if not the worst) accident and fatality rate in the world and it is increasing......................enforce the existing laws and forget about this stupid game.......texting - facebook - line etc etc are all mobile apps and are all used by drivers while driving motor vehicles

I guess they just don't know how stupid they look.

They just blindly turn away at so many traffic offences from mobile phone use to no helmets to downright dangerous driving and now they shove some stupid looking yellow balloons on their bikes to make the whole exercise look totally ridiculous .

I don't know who's the more stupid the dangerous outlaw Pokemon gang or the Pokemon posse who are going to round these hardline criminals up.

They seem like they might cause a few crashes themselves…with drivers staring at their ridiculous balloons.

Another childish publicity stunt that they think makes them look good.

Soon there will be an announcement giving enforcement figures and then it will slip into oblivion like all the other   '  crackdowns  '.

Not going to help the Pokemon Go tourist push!

Are the Pokemon Cops the same as the Keystone cops?

apparently if they see you using your phone they then check the phone to see what you were doing. as long as you werent playing pokiemon you are allowed to go as it is other cops jobs to police that offence. thailand is a crazy country.

Clowns ,if only they know how stupid they look,

Thailand should run this as national anthem for a year to expose what a pathetic circus this country really is:

Yeh, now they can run out into the road even more to try to stop drivers as they ride by, making the roads even more dangerous.

Clowns, all of them.

the crafty Japanese will have to come up with a sneaky Pokemon character,

with no hands,

and have a blue       tooth

Catch the Pokemon's, while the red light runners, get a free pass.
