Is it possible to stay in Thailand longer than three months over a period of six months ?

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

Nationality : Belgium

I’m presently in Laos for 30 days and I’m here exploring the possibilities to get back to Thailand with a classic tourist visa (two months with a possible extension of stay of one month, as you know, so for a total of three months).

However, when I check the rules via the linked app proposed by the website, I get this information for belgian citizens :

“ It is not possible to stay in Thailand longer than three months over a period of six months.”

Precisions on my particular case if it could help for answer :

- I never use the exemption system. Only one time two years ago.

- I’ve just used a tourist visa (2 months + extension of one month, which has expired this month.

- For the first time in years I visit, study or work in Thailand always with the right visa and in accordance with all the rules in force, I got a fine for overstay (an overstay of 1 day, in fact one night ... ) at the exit. A totally unintentional one : a sick child at the hospital, a girlfriend I helped and a border closed early in the evening, what I did not know. I explained the situation ; they were very nice with me but I’ve not been able to escape the fine and this was mentioned in the passport.

My questions :

  • This rule limiting the stay at three months over six, is it still in force ?
  • Can I hope to get a single entry tourist visa from Laos next month ? So, not exactly in a row with the previous one but almost, with only one month in between ?
  • If this limitation of stay is right, then can I at least … presume that it obviously could not be relevant when we’re applying for other types of visa (non-B or ED for example) ?

Thank you for your help.

Have a wonderful day.

M

  1. No. And it never was for tourist visa entries.
