Officials brace for possibility of more severe tremors after 6.8 quake in Myanmar

BANGKOK, 25 August 2016 (NNT) - Officials are bracing for the possibility of another earthquake greater than the recent 6.8 magnitude quake in Myanmar.

The Department of Mineral Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has been monitoring the Arakan fault line in Rakhine State of Myanmar, reporting no aftershocks following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar on August 24th.

Suwit Kosuwan, who heads the fault line research department at the Bureau of Environment Geology, revealed that the area had received three foreshocks before the main earthquake occurred at 5:34pm on August 24th.

He said the lack of aftershocks is an irregular phenomena, which could possibility mean that a larger earthquake will befall the area. An earthquake with a magnitude greater than 7.0 would affect buildings in Bangkok, as well as the northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Tak and Mae Hong Son.

Mr Suwit said the occurrence of aftershocks would be the preferable alternative for the region, as they typically have magnitudes between 5.1 and 6.0. He added that quakes that occur deeper in the ground would have a lesser effect on the surface.

The recent quake in Myanmar occurred 90 kilometers below ground level, which caused less damage compared to the 6.2 magnitude quake in Italy that occurred at only five kilometers below ground level.

Another article here said "no impact on Thailand". I guess they are bracing for "an even greater no impact" quake? Quick, let's form a committee and book ourselves into a resort to study this!

Finally Thailand is being made aware of the  very possible impact an earthquake of  any sizeable magnitude even near has the potential to  cause widespread  danger.

The  highrise buildings in  Bangkok are an issue  but given the  construction methods  of  most concrete block dwellings all around Thailand any significant shockwave could see walls literally exploding with associated injuries. This fact has already been demonstrated in the  northwest but the significant ignored. :(

Prepare for Thailand Proactiveness, (Thainess).

Actually in Bangkok the nature of the clay is such that earthquakes cause the most damage to 10 story apartment blocks, as verified by the large crack in the stairwell wall of my Bang Kapi apartment. But nothing that can't be fixed with the Thai equivalent of polyfiller.

Stuff some parrots in the cracks, plaster it over and away you go.

Most modern high rise building at built to sway when quakes occur and it would have to be a might big quack to cause much destruction in KT. Lets hope none come along.

What exactly does   '  officials braced  '   mean,   have any proactive measures been put into effect   ?

Are the authorities ready to react or will they wait until something happens,   then think about it before doing anything   ?

Does Bangkok have earthquakes?

There were several earthquakes in Bangkok along time and all odds indicate that there will be some more in the future. Even if Bangkok is situated somehow at a far-away distance from the major seismic sources, there is still a risk that in the future this city will be struck by a stronger earthquake of ground motions. There are three main factors that cause this risk and these are represented by the ability of the regional seismic sources of generating big earthquakes, by the capacity of broad unconsolidated deposits to amplify the ground motions of a regular earthquake and finally by the low rate attenuation of this region.s ground motions.

In the case in which a greater earthquake would produce in Bangkok, there could be a considerable life loss in the city and also an extensive destruction of buildings. However, strong earthquakes have produced in the past in Bangkok, as well. The one in the year 2004 that had a magnitude of 9.1 unfortunately killed no less than 230,000 people. In addition, this started a tsunami that made numerous victims and destroyed a large part of the city, as well. That was one of the most destructive earthquakes that have ever happened in the world.

Goodness, I wrote that at 3 AM or something, but I could have made  better job of the spelling. Atrocious.

Lets hope Donald does not come over and give a big quack, either Duck or Trump, it could be disastrous.
