Accidents Claim 11 More Lives

Nine people died and four were seriously injured yesterday evening in a collision between a Mekong Express minibus and a truck on National Road 5 in Battambang province’s Moung Russey district, police said. Sath Kimsan, Battambang’s provincial traffic police chief, said nine people, including five women, died at the scene and four were seriously injured and sent to a provincial hospital for treatment.

“From our preliminary conclusion, the accident was caused by the truck because it drove fast to overtake another car and then crashed into the front of the minibus, which was coming in the opposite direction, and the minibus went off the road and into the ditch,” he said. Mr. Kimsan said the minibus was traveling from Battambang province to Phnom Penh.

“There were 12 people, including the driver, in the minibus, and there were two people in the truck. Both drivers died at the scene,” he said, adding that the truck driver’s assistant had survived. “I want to send a message to all drivers to be careful when they are driving because most traffic accidents are caused by careless driving and speeding and they cannot control themselves when facing a problem.”
