Thailand places fourth in World Youth Scrabble Championship

 

A young Thai student placed fourth in the MSI English language World Youth Scrabble Championship that concluded in Lille, France yesterday.

Siriwat Suthapintu won 17 of his 24 games finishing ahead of former world champion Jack Durand of the UK who was the highest finishing native English speaker in the event.

other Thais finishing in the top 30 at the 107 person showpiece were Sorawut Chucharoen who was 14th, Tawanjames Barwell (15th), Nattakit Charee (22nd) and Nititorn Laimek who finished 30th.

Highest Thai female was Hathaiphat who come from Bangkok who was 38th.

Scrabble is very popular in Thailand and each year the kingdom sends one of the biggest teams to the event.

The event was won by 16 year old Sanchit Kapoor representing the UAE.

He was born in India and dashed off after the tournmanet to get back to school!

Tomorrow (Wednesday) sees the start of the adult world championships in which Komol Panyasophonlert from Bangkok is seeded second. 

He will be joined by Chiang Mai doctor Jakkrit Klaphajone and long time British resident of Bangkok Gerry Carter who are also representing Thailand.

The adult world champion will be crowned on Sunday.

The event is sponsored by Mindsports International a company based in Plymouth, England.

Really.

 

Could you even compete at any level let alone at an international level.

 

He even finished ahead of the highest ranking native English speaker.

 

There were 7 Thais out of the top 40 positions which is damn good for any country.

 

A Good Show to all of them and to all the other competitors who took part.
