Industry Minister Atchaka Sribunruang, right, welcomes the representative of a delegation from Jiangsu.

BANGKOK: -- Thailand has attracted huge investment from China, with the value of investment projects submitted for tax privileges in the first seven months hitting Bt21.46 billion.

Industry Minister Atchaka Sribunruang said that in terms of value, China was the second only to Japan which applied for Board of Investment’s privileges for projects worth Bt27 billion.

"Chinese enterprises are attracted to the policy to promote 10 target industries and the Eastern Economic Corridor," she said after welcoming a business delegation from Jiangsu, a coastal Chinese province north of Shanghai.

She was briefed that 87 Jiangsu enterprises have established presence in Thailand, including 37 enterprises which have applied for the BoI privileges for their investment projects valued around US$600 million (approximately Bt20 billion). A delegate is also prepared to submit a project worth about $30 million (about Bt1 billion).

Watcharee Tintani, director of Investment Promotion Section, Royal Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai, said the section targets to draw at least $25 billion investment from Shanghai to Thailand this year. She is confident of achieving the goal given companies in locomotive and train carriage manufacturing exploring investment opportunities in Thailand.

In 2017, the section targets the investment from at least 80 companies operating in the 10 target industries being promoted by Thailand.

Hope those Chinese investment projects don't include any Chinese architects...

There will be a cost. There always is with China.

Love the math .... $630mm for the first 7 months, so on target to acheive $25 billion this year. One hell of a hockey stick graph!

Anything done, businesslike or otherwise, with China, tends to become one way traffic.

True, however consider the benefits western multinationals provide client countries: elimination of local industry competition, pay no taxes and provide a few low skill jobs. Governments in the past have been overthrown as western multinationals didn't like the treatment they were getting.

Chinese industry has made China a pollution nightmare, hope they aren't here just to escape tightening regulations back home.

it is probably closer to the first steps of a takeover

Actually a lot of them are trying to get around anti dumping issues

As many of the Chinese manufactures facing quotas and anti dumping tax if manufacture in China but if I'm Thailand or Vietnam or other place they are investing .. Then they can avoid such

This is of course not the only reason or the complete reason, but a major factor

Say what you like about the Chinese, but they are savvy business persons

Throughout history, look to where every the Chinese immigrate or settle down and they grow and take over economies over generations

based on the opinions of the resident Thaivisa-eggsburts anything that might be positive for Thailand is either a lie, a gross exaggeration, a danger or not in favour of expats living in Thailand :coffee1:

Purchase, as they expect ownership just like in Laos.

Not a bad price for buying a country
