Riverside communities confident in Govt's flood prevention measures

  

BANGKOK, 7 September 2016 (NNT) – Several communities along the Chao Phraya River are keeping a close eye on the water level while voicing confidence in the government’s ability to prevent flooding. 

A survey has been conducted on the water situation in Wat Bang Khlo Nok Community in Bang Kho Laem district which is usually prone to flooding and found that the water level is still normal.

 

The community leader made known that recent high tides did not cause any flooding in the area as the water did not overflow the flood dyke. Nonetheless, the community has been troubled by excessive amounts of water hyacinth and garbage in waterways which could obstruct water flow and drainage. Related authorities were thus asked to help with dredging operations. 

Meanwhile, a resident of Wat In Banchong Community also reported that the water level is being constantly monitored and the situation has been normal so far. Although the water level has reached its record high during the past year, no inundation has occurred in the community. The resident pointed out that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration would usually issue an advance warning to the community when a flood is imminent. 

As for the community behind Charoen Krung Pracha Rak Hospital, no flooding was also discovered. Residents continue to live their normal lives, feeling certain their neighborhood is well protected from river overflows.

Nearly the end of an insufficient rainy season and drought again pending in the not too distant future it's a fairly good bet there will be no flooding now.

Do recall when the 2011 flooding was.. then you will see it started late too..

In 2011, the monsoons started in May, and major flooding began as Tropical Storm Nock-ten raged through 14 northern provinces, killing 7, from 31 July. Then, instead of the wet season ending as usual in October, La Niña precipitated heavier and longer downpours for the rest of the year.

 

It was 3 August when Drainage and Sewerage Department Director Sanya Shenimitra said that overall, there is nothing to be worried about as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is capable of handling the flood situation, and expressed confidence that Bangkok would not be severely affected by the swelling river flow.

 

From then it was like a slow motion train wreck...
