A Venezuelan national was arrested at Phnom Penh International Airport on Monday evening after arriving from Thailand with almost 1.5 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage, the same day that a Malaysian man was arrested attempting to fly to Macau with one kilogram of heroin strapped to his legs.

Adelys Paola Lopez Alviares, 23, who arrived at 10:45pm aboard a Bangkok Airways flight, was arrested after police grew suspicious of her behavior, said an airport police official who declined to give his name. He said that Ms. Lopez Alviares had initially boarded a flight in Brazil to Ethiopia, before flying to Thailand and then Cambodia.

Hidden under clothing in her suitcase police found 1,449.43 grams of cocaine, he said. On Monday morning, Malaysian national Ahmad Johari Chung, also 23, was arrested at Phnom Penh airport after security guards discovered 1,068.61 grams of heroin strapped to his legs. Monday’s arrests follow last month’s arrests of a Romanian man at the airport, who had arrived with almost five kilograms of cocaine in his luggage. Police went with him to a hotel in Phnom Penh where they arrested a Nigerian national who had been the intended buyer.

A 61-year-old woman was arrested at the Kandal Provincial Prison on Monday after trying to give 10 small packages of crystal methamphetamine hidden among fruit to her son, an inmate there.     Sath Borany, from Prek Takhmao village in Takhmao City, was arrested at the prison on Monday afternoon after attempting to get the drugs to her 25-year-old son, Chim Ratha, according to prison chief Thath Sineang.

He said the woman visited her son, a convicted robber, and brought him food and two large mangoes.   “She was soon arrested after our provincial prison guards inspected the package of mangoes and found and seized a total of 10 small packages of crystal methamphetamine,” he said. “She was accused of drug trafficking.”

A security guard at the Kandal Provincial Prison, who asked not to be named, told Khmer Times yesterday that according to Ms. Borany’s confession, before her arrest, she had successfully sent drugs to inmates at the prison on seven previous visits by hiding the drugs in food.  Ms. Borany has now been transferred to provincial anti-drug trafficking police for legal action, the security guard said, adding that Mr. Ratha, the suspect’s son, was also facing drug trafficking charges.
