Office of Ombudsman suspends probe into alleged graft by an election commissioner

BANGKOK, 14 September 2016 (NNT) – The Office of the Ombudsman Thailand has suspended its investigation into alleged graft involving one of the election commissioners.

Secretary-General of the Office of the Ombudsman Thailand Raksagecha Chaechai made the announcement this week at the latest meeting to consider the petition asking for an investigation of Election Commissioner Theerawat Theerarojwit for allegedly abusing his power when he was an Appeals Court judge.

Mr. Theerawat has also been accused of seriously unethical behavior.

The Office of the Ombudsman has agreed to cease the investigation into the alleged abuse of power because the National Anti-Corruption Commission has already taken up the case, said Mr. Raksagecha.

He added that the decision was intended to avoid any duplicated probes.

Regarding the charge of his unethical behavior, Mr. Raksagecha said that Mr. Theerawat has sent in his statement, which is yet to be reviewed to determine if he can attest to the information the Office of the Ombudsman has obtained.

He expects a conclusion will be arrived at before the end of this week.
