Malaysia to Train Muslim Teachers

The government on Tuesday asked a visiting delegation from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (MIDD) to provide professional teacher training for Cambodian Muslim educators. Othsman Hassan, a secretary of state at the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, told Khmer Times that he made the proposal to the 12-person delegation during a meeting at the Cambodian Muslim Development Foundation. However, he declined to answer further questions.
 

According to the government-run news agency AKP, the visiting Malaysians were researching the possibility of a teacher training project in Cambodia, designed to boost the teaching capabilities of teachers at the country’s Islamic schools. AKP noted that Haji Mohamed Nordin Ismail, who led the delegation, had already obtained preliminary approval from the Malaysian government, and an initial grant of $300,000.
 

Kampong Cham and Kampong Chhnang provinces will likely be the first to benefit from the training, with the possibility of expanding it to other provinces. Cambodia’s Muslim population is predominantly comprised of the Cham ethnic group. According to a recent US State Department report on religious freedoms, Muslims account for about three percent of the total population.
