Thai SMEs urges govt to do more to boost exports

  

BANGKOK, 15 September 2016 (NNT) - Operators of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand have urged the government to adjust its export duty structure to allow them to sell more products overseas. 

On the last day of the 13th China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning, China, no business partnerships were established between Thai and Chinese entrepreneurs. 

Thai SME representatives explained that they would have to be patient and more thorough in business details with their Chinese counterparts as many Chinese importers had failed to make prompt payments in the past. 

They also asked the government to consider lowering the duty on exported items to enable SMEs to sell more products. 

Moreover, dried fruit producers asked the government to higher the standards of the Food and Drug Administration so that the quality of Thai goods can be accepted in the international market.

A horribly written news article that makes no sense, or was translated wrong. Thai SMEs would not be asking the THAI government to lower import duties so they can sell and export more of their products to China, they would be asking the CHINESE government to do that. On the other hand, if they are asking for Thailand customs to be lowered, then they are planning to IMPORT more products from China to sell in Thailand, which would help importers, but not Thai exporters.

They are not be asking the government to lower import duties, they are asking the government to "consider lowering the duty on exported items."

There is no duty on exported items, unless there are specific export controls on things like high technology, which Thailand does not export.

Strange that the Thai Customs site specifically mentions payment of something that doesn't exist...

The people in power with all their corrupt money buying properties and investments oversees do not want a devalued baht.  They want to get their money out converted to the m,aximum in foreign currency.  They will therefore resist that idea - it matters not what is good for the country unless it is the ordinary Joe that does it.

Yes this statement could use a little upgrade. Yes the standard of dried fruit here is excellent as is the price unless you buy at he large market by the river. I have bought dried mango from her for years and the price never changes and the quality is great. Sadly the quality of a lot of other things are not. The prices are about 35% of the prices at my local supermarket. Buyer beware. Some sellers seem to think they can charge all that the traffic will bear like taxi's.

Of course, the whole concept is nonsense anywhere in the world. But, as the poster above referenced the Thai customs site, there are some unique export duties due with Thailand exports. I'm not familiar with this, but expect those amounts are negligible. Such a duty or tax penalizes exports and hurts the country, so I doubt they are too much.  Maybe someone knowledge about this specific aspect can comment.
