I am a Uk citizen and intend spending 6 months in Australia. I have been here for 12 years on an extension of a non o visa based on retirement. I will be returning to Thailand after my extension renewal date. My question what visa am I best obtaining ( from Australia ) to enable me to start my retirement extension  easily. I have funds in Thailand so seasoning is not required.

If you could get a singe entry non-o visa it would be best visa to get. Australians have found that they are unable to get them according to reports. Since you are not Australian you  should contact the embassy or the consulate in Sydney about getting one.

If not the a single entry tourist visa would be the next best option. Then you could do a  change of visa status to get a 90 day non immigrant visa (category 0) entry at a few immigration offices or at Bangkok immigration.

Sydney and Canberra have bad reputations, try the consulates in Perth, Melbourne or Brisbane, far easier to deal with and friendlier as well.

If you have no joy with a non-O in Australia why not in due course fly back to LOS via Penang and apply for a non-O at the Royal Thai Consulate there?

Thanks for the replies. I will try in Brisbane. Last resort come back on a 30 exemption. ....is this easily converted?

How easy it is to do the conversion would depend upon where you live. The number of offices doing them is limited. You might have to make two long trips to Bangkok 15 days apart.

You also have to have 15 days reaming on your entry when you apply.

Hua Hin?.......got a feeling the answer will be no!

I don't recall any reports of Hua Hin being able to accept the applications for a non immigrant visa. You should check with them about it.

Bangkok has authorized some offices within the central region to accept the applications that are then sent to them for approval.

Would not one option be to get your one-year retirement extension before you leave? Then get a re-entry permit at the same time.

Since the OP mentions he will be in Australia for 6 months I suspect that he will be leaving before the maximum of 45 days early he could apply for his new extension.
