Former and current students of Eastern Ratchamongkol Technology University’s Uthen Thawai campus on Thursday joined forces with members of the civic groups staged a cleanup in front of Siam Square shopping centre as part of the efforts to improve its public image.

The students and volunteers from civic groups mopped the footpath, repainted no-parking signs and cleaned the barricades.

Mr Suebpong Muangchu, vice rector of the university, said that Uthen Thawai students were, in the past, perceived by members of the public as violent prone and had a bad image for being trouble makers.

The university has found it necessary to change this image and to instill in the students –both junior and senior – about the values of mutual respect and non-violence especially during initiation activities.

Initiation ritual to welcome the freshmen is a good thing, but it must be done in a constructive manner without hurting the freshmen, physically and mentally, said Mr Suebpong.
