BANGKOK: -- "Rai" tropical depression has dissolved but it created havoc in vast areas of the country's north and northeastern regions.

Massive downpours unleashed by the storm have inundated several provinces in the northern part.

Hardest hit by flood is Sukhothai.

In Sukhothai province, the municipal area was badly affected by flooding after the swollen Yom river bursted banks in some areas, sending floodwater to submerge homes and roads along the banks.

A 100-metre sandbag embankment built to protect the town’s economic zone was also destroyed by the strong current of the swollen river.

The breaking of the embankment forced immediate evacuation of people from their homes last night.

The governor of Sukhothai inspected the embankment last night and ordered immediate repair to ease the situation.

Temporary barriers using sandbags were erected to prevent further flooding in the economic zone.

The extensive overflows have also inundated many sections of the Charod Withee Road in front of the Ban Pak Kaew School under 20 cm of water.

Local authorities are worried more rains today could deteriorate the flood situation.

In Phetchabun’s Lomsak district, hospital officials have to evacuate patients as water was rising steadily.
