AIS told to investigate claims of more phone usage leaks

 

 

Mobile phone service provider Advance Info Service was told to investigate claims by affected phone users that information of phone usage of over 100 phone subscribers had been leaked to outsiders by someone inside the company in the past two years.

 

National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) secretary-general Takorn Tanthasit said Tuesday that AIS told the commission that there were only 4-5 people in the company who had access to the phone usage information of its clients and one of them, an IT specialist, who was suspected to have leaked the data to outsiders had been fired.

 

A client who claimed his phone usage was leaked, Mr Pholpakorn Satthanarong, was also invited to give his side of the story to the NBTC on Monday.

The company has also filed charge against the IT specialist with the police, he added.

 

Insisting that leaking information about phone usage of customers is an offence, Thakorn said he would seek an approval of the board at a meeting next week to take legal action against the AIS official implicated in the data leaks.

 

Meanwhile, Mrs Vilai Kiangpradoo, senior assistant director for public relations of AIS, explained that because of the nature of the work of the IT specialist which was a one-man’s job, the company was totally unaware of the transgressions.

I'm not sure what 'phone usage' means and what all the fuss is about? Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Phone usage could mean a number of things, from metadata to the contents of messages (say, to a gik) themselves. Obviously some people would not like the contents of certain messages to leak.

according to the original article, there was an excel file with users name, phone number, address, details regarding to phone usage (minutes, data plan, etc), ID information. The IT specialist sold this  information to third party. Third party use this info to try to sell users stuff or send sms messages to subscribe to things, etc.
