Emergency... Can I get an extension on the day in Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

I’m in CM right now. I thought my visa was up at the end of next week but it’s actually up on Monday. I wanted to get the 30 day extension. Trouble is it is Saturday now and the office won’t be open until Monday. Do you know if it is possible to get a visa extension on Monday or is that too late.

Thanks

Yes you can apply for an extension of stay on Monday.

Thanks for the reply.

That was the answer I was looking for.

I'll head to the visa office as early as possible.

If something goes wrong I can try to fly to KL in the evening.

What visa do you have?  There are two Immigration offices in Chiang Mai?

Since you inquired about obtaining a 30 day extension, it seems you have either a tourist visa or a non-exempt entry (not really a visa).  In those cases, you go to the Immigration office at Promenada mall.  You'll need to bring the address of where you're staying in Chiang Mai -- it's amazing how many tourists show up at the Imm. Prom. office with no clue about the correct and complete address of the place they're staying.  A simple business card would suffice.

I was there once and overheard a conversation someone had with the info desk.  He was looking for a 30 day extension and had just arrived in Chiang Mai from Bangkok on the overnight train.  He really didn't have a "local address" in Chiang Mai yet and it seemed that Immigration was going to refuse his application for an extension.  Finally someone suggested he just "make up" a place and write it on the form and said he should write down "The Railway Hotel".  I came to find out that place was torn down years ago, and turned into a public park that is now a disused field of weeds, but Immigration accepted the application.

Thanks for the reply.

I've been to the mall before and know the drill. I was in Thailand about 6 months ago and got the extension.

I'm doing a dissertation at the moment so my mind was focused on that. That's why I failed to check the dates earlier.

My main worry was that I would be classed as illegal (overstaying) on the day but I guess I will only be illegal on Tuesday so I will be ok.

Ha, I enjoyed the added story at the end.

Thanks

If the stamp in your passport has an 'admitted until' date that is the 24th, 25th or 26th you will have no problem applying on Monday. If you go on Tuesday they would probably still give you the extension, but they would charge you 500 baht for the 1 day overstay.
