Police at the Phnom Penh International Airport on Friday arrested a South African national for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country by swallowing 100 packages of pills, a senior police official told Khmer Times. Lieutenant General Mak Chito, deputy National Police commissioner in charge of drug crimes, said that the suspect, Jacobus Botha Sawie, 30, was found to have swallowed 100 wrapped cocaine pellets, each approximately three centimeters in length, after police scanned his abdomen. Police have yet to release the total weight of cocaine the suspect was transporting.

“We brought him to Calmette Hospital to take out all the pellets from his stomach. It should be done by tomorrow [Monday],” he told Khmer Times, adding that 40 of the pills have already been retrieved as of yesterday after they were naturally expelled by the suspect. “This is not the first time a suspect was caught hiding drugs in his stomach but they cannot escape our expert police.”

According to Lt. Gen. Chito, the suspect came from Brazil, transiting in Dubai and Bangkok, before he arrived in Cambodia on a Bangkok Airways flight on Friday. In May, police arrested two Nigerian nationals for attempting to smuggle one kilogram of cocaine into Cambodia by swallowing packets of the drugs. Police fed them papaya and milk to facilitate the natural passing of the drugs.

Obviously they can't x-ray the stomach of every tourist coming into the country. I wonder what gave immigration the clue to look at this South African.

My money's on the curiosity of not many South African's arriving from Brazil.

Maybe somebody could invent some kind of ultrasound device that would automatically cause all such "internally deposited" packets to burst.  All arriving pax would have to simply walk through it, with no effects unless carrying such packets.  And don't keep the machine a secret.   Post signs just before customs.  Then sit back and enjoy the show.

You'd be surprised of what systems Thailand now has at international airports - yes they can x-ray the the body of every tourist coming into the country without them knowing anything about it... and with mobile ZBV trucks running up and down the highways... and in the ports scanning every container.

Certainly, no spear chucker with a gut full of coke eggs is going to be breezing through to any Thai international airport arrival hall nowadays without setting off alarms.
