I am working on the possibility that this maybe a malware infestation after checking the power settings etc on my win 10 PC

Anybody ever heard of Farbar recovery tool?

Thank in advance

Have you checked to see whether your PC might be downloading the 1607 update in the background? If it is, this might well be the cause.

Thanks for your comment

I think that my PC is in fact in the middle of a series of win 10 updates ( last 24 hours or so) so maybe it could be affecting my pc  but I dont know how it can cause  freezing of the screen  (my ignorance)

I did download and run the Farbar recovery tool  which did in fact find a lot of hidden stuff that other junkware tool removers had missed  and fixed them but nothing that would cause this intermittent freezing of the screen

PS just ran Windows update troubleshooter and it came up with "Repairing windows update components! and whilst it was running it said something about the the "Cryptic service " as well

PS PS just for the record ran the Windows update troubleshooter 3 times in the last 5 minutes and it come  up with the same p[problem as stated above every time, in other words it isn't repairing the windows update components at all

I am baffled (as usual)

- Troubleshooters have to be run as an administrator.

- Is the Freezing the whole PC or just the Browser? Is the Disk Access light on solid when it freezes? Right Click the task bar and open Task Manager; click the Performance bar.  What is the PC doing when it freezes?

- Download a bootable Antivirus ISO and scan and clean to ensure that there is nothing running that can hide from Farbar or anything else.

- If the Updates appear to be working, let them run and let them finish; they'll probably require a reboot.

The 1607 update definitely will require a reboot!

The usual causes of frozen screen are a malfunction Hardware:
 - Insufficient Memory Ram or malfunctioning.
 - Processor heats.
 - Graphic Card heater
 - Hard drive end of life.

It is possible that recent updates have overloaded your system and your equipment don't follow.

How to cure  ?

1 Control and clean the fan (single brush + vacuum cleaner)
2 Advanced System Properties - Performance - select "adjust for best performance"
3 Start Menu - Administrative Tools - diagnostic memory. Also check
connection of the strips. One can usually double the Ram low price for a smoother operation.
4 Check the mouse driver in device manager. Some software like Elantech are very hungry in resource. It is always possible to return to the previous driver. Check also all new drivers.

If these operations are ineffective, backup your data is advisable. Then, entrust your computer to a technician who will test your hard drive.

Ran all TS as admin,  Think it is all the PC apart from the mouse as I cannot do anything with the mouse apart from move it till the screen unfreezes.

Could you elaborate on a "bootable Antivirus ISO" as I have not heard of it before?

The updates seem to have stopped at the moment.

Just went into Google settings and there was an alert saying that an App had corrupted my google setting and they needed to be reset!

Hi Joe just about a week ago had the whole PC stripped down for cleaning and adding 8 GB of  DDR3 ram  to make 16 Gb , changed the old graphics card for a newer one, a Radeon HD7850   Graphics card  and all has worked well until yesterday when I got these "freezes" that seem to becoming more frequent and lasting longer.

Done the "Power adjustment to High performance

Checked that all drivers are up to date with Snail driver and also double checked with Devise manager.

Checked the drive fro bad sectors or errors and no problem there.

PS

Actually I was wrong there I had checked both drives when I finished the work on the PC last week and just for the record did a check with the tools in Disc manager Lo and behold there was a problem , the disc was repaired and i am now hoping that maybe the problem shag gone!

Keeping my fingers crossed!

I am using a Samsung Evo 750  SSd 120GB for OS and a 1000Gb HDD for storage

Ten minutes later from the last post.

No it hasn't made any difference, still freezing the screen.

Just tried a Youtube video and it lost about 12 seconds of the film, the sound kept on running all the time  on the film  but the image was frozen, and when it came back on the film was at at a later point, as though there had been a portion cut out!

It's not hardware freezing if it's still playing audio but the video stops.

The first thing I would do is see if the driver for your graphics card needs updating.

You can use IOBit Driver Booster:

http://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php

ISO's are basically images you can burn to a CD or a USB. You can then Boot from that drive instead of your Hard Disk. This ensures a clean environment and that nothing is running hidden.

The ones in the link I provided are all antivirus programs; you boot them, you get a scan and clean menu, etc.

Once done, you remove it and reboot into your normal environment.

The links tell you how to download the ISO.

Then you can use something like Rufus to write the ISO to a USB and make it a bootable drive.

Thanks Chicog

I did check the drivers for the GC and they were up to date. So i rolled back the driver but it didn't make any difference

I will download the ISO and have a try with that but Im beginning tio think I may have a Graphic card problem!

PS

Just had an idea I should have thought of before.

This PC has dual boot and a HDD with win 10 OS and it booted it up and no problems and ran Youtive videos  without  any freezes so I will do another install tomorrow  of Win 10 on the SSD and see if that makes any difference.

At least I now know that maybe the OS on the SSD could be corrupted

Make sure that no corruption is able to take place, by not allowing the system diks to see each other by simply removing the disk label inside Windows 10 Disk Management of the other W 10 operating system disk.

I would just suggest based on my experience. I'd got the same problem with my w10 convertible. The best way to solve it is to reboot it to previous (latest) installation. Just save everything to another drive(flash usb whatever).
Just a suggestion.
But you better go to your pc's service center.

That won't help if the malware has been embedded for a while.

Thanks for that but I am going to take the  as yet uncontaminated HDD out altogether and subject the SSD to an army of  anti Virus  checkers.

If that doesn't work I will then try  either a Windows  "repair" of the SSD or a clean install as iit was  only being being used  as a means of Fast booting my PC in the first place, that was/is until the price of 1TB SSDs comes down

Just had a look at the link Chicog and first thought was,  is it worth doing all that the link advises if I am only using the small 120GB SSD as a boot disc?

Definitely would and will  will follow the advice on the link when I can afford to upgrade to an SSD that can hold the OS and all my files etc. in one place .

Possibly you could give me your thought on this because if it is practical I will do it when I have cleaned the SSD up straight away.

Thanks once again and to all the others who have commentated on this thread

Update

Just removed  1 TB   HDD for safety reasons  before I started to get to grips with the errant SSD.

Reset the SSD to its original  form (kept no data or files Etc)

Just for the record before it reset, it found  a problem on the  SSD disc and repaired it

One hour later I am please as punch, the SSD seems not only to be working OK but a lot quicker than it was.

Videos are all working normally and no freezes.

Thanks to Chicog and everybody else who helped

I would say yes. Most of the tips are really about optimising performance and reducing unnecessary disk writes to the SSD.

MY desktop has been freezing for a few days now. I followed Chicog's information in post #4 and this morning I looked up in settings and it appears that windows 10 is trying to download update 1607 while I am trying to use the PC. I have the download to defer and before I go to bed tonight I will try to download the update overnight.

Ask this to the Microsoft Windows 10 forum. Some technical experts may personally send you mail.

Thanks markusangel,

I think that the problem came from either a problem with the SSD itself or there was a Virus in the SSD which damaged the disc and also corrupted my Chrome browser settings, from where it came  I dont know,  but I didn't ever go on any dubious sites etc .

As the problem is now resolved I wont contact win 10 support but in the past when I have been in touch with them  have found them to be slow  to respond, if they do ever respond .

thanks anyway for your kind sugestion

In which case I will start work on it now

In fairness he said the Windows 10 forums, but he didn't actually specify which one.
