Police Mistakenly Arrest 83 Chinese

Featured Replies

Police detained, and later released, 83 Chinese nationals, including nine women, after they had mistakenly believed the group to have been running a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) scam out of a hotel in Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet. Major General Seang San, chief of the internal security police department at the Ministry of Interior, said yesterday it was a case of mistaken identity.

“At first we suspected them to be a group of Chinese mafia who had been threatening and extorting people from China and Taiwan via VoIPs, calling them from Cambodia. So after the raid, our police arrested 83 Chinese nationals from the hotel,” he said. “After questioning, however, they did not seem to be involved in monetary extortion or any other crimes. They were involved in operating online games, but they were only just planning it, they had not yet begun operations.”

Police raided the Neak Tip Hotel in Poipet Town on Monday afternoon and held all 83 Chinese nationals overnight to be questioned. Once police realized they had not committed any crimes in Cambodia, all 83 were released. Police have recently been cracking down on VoIP scams, a scam where individuals in Cambodia extort money from people in China, having deported 60 Chinese nationals last week who were believed to have been involved.

Must be a new Guinness Book of Records for mistaken arrests.

Too bad they didn't make mistake an arrest,  1.5 million of them in Bangkok.

There would be less yelling.
