Ex-education minister Somsak loses Bt16m home following court ruling

BANGKOK: -- THE SUPREME Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders has ruled in favour of the seizure request of a Bt16 million home belonging to former Chart Thai Pattana Party MP Somsak Prissananantakul, after he failed to adequately explain how he got the money to buy it.

Somsak, a key figure in the party and a former education minister, said he accepted the court's verdict yesterday.

Public prosecutors last year filed the case, asking the court to seize the ex-party list MP's property, which he had failed to declare when he was a minister.

Can we assume there will be criminal charges to follow, or aren't they connected in anyway.

Does the ฿16 Million refer to the value of the house now, or when it was being built back in 1998 (when, incidentally, the Democrat Party was in government under PM Chuan Leekpai, and Somsark was deputy Education Minister)? If the latter, then it is probably worth considerably more now - and this estimate should be reported.

 

Either way, this is surely just a token gesture that will probably have little impact on Prissananantakul's resources!

 

It's only fitting that he accepted the court's verdict - if his memory is that bad that he can't adequately explain how he got the money, then he's probably wondering which house has been "seized".

i wonder if there is going to be a wave of asset grabs in the near future. many government officials not aligned with the good general may be wishing they kept their wealth in cash on their private planes and not in bangkok property.

He accepted the decision because he has many more homes both inside and outside of the country.  I doubt he could explain where the money came from for them either !

According to the BP, he claimed it was built with money from campaign contributions. What could be more natural?

Am I missing something. Has any big wigs from the military and the police being investigated for their millions. You are easily satisfy with crumbs.

Yes 16M is crumbs.. compared to what YL did but don't worry they are busy with her too and then soon you have a big wig caught too.. or is that not what you mean. Seems some guys hate it if a former PTP ally gets caught. 

 

And yes the army needs to be checked too Peechai comes to mind.. but that does not mean others can't be caught. Its better than nothing.

The fact that he did not contest the confiscation of the house indicates the loss is only a drop in the bucket of what he took in graft.

But, you have to start somewhere and if the policies are in place and executed accordingly then people start to think about doing things differently for fear of retribution, which is all anyone is really asking for. It's a start so give them a break and maybe things will change if they get some support instead of derision and slating all the time

16 million is still 16 million whichever way you look at it and it puts the objective out there for all to see

For once, for the first time since May 2014 go after their own people.  It's disingenuous to say they have to start somewhere when we all know it's not going to spread to their side of unusually rich office holders.
