webfact
DSI crackdown on fake clothing as Americans demand action Image: Thairath BANGKOK: -- The Department of Special Investigations has announced arrests of suspects and seizures of fake clothing in three separate cases in Bangkok. Raids over the last month at MBK, Bo Bae market and Pratunam are in response to government orders to get tough following demands from the US to act on pirated goods, reported Thairath. The government is keen to free itself from trade sanctions imposed over the trade in fake goods. On 31st August two shops in Ma Bun Krong were raided. The shops were Alan and Endless. Good found included Adidas, Armani, Diesel, Versace, Polo, Tommy and Gucci. A total of 1,455 items were seized worth 1.3 million baht. Arrested were owners Thanakrit Nooplab and Pulaporn Phuangjan. On 8th September 168 Jeans shop in the Bo Bae market was raided along with storage and factory facilities related to the store. Some 3,297 pairs of fake designer jeans such as Levis, Wrangler, Mac and Nudie worth 1.4 million baht were taken into evidence. Owner Sukkit Suknanthaporn was arrested. This Tuesday the DSI raided a shop on the fourth floor of Platinum Pratunam and a storage facility in Soi Charoenrat Soi 7. A total of 73,000 items of fake sports clothing was seized including Adidas, Nike, Tommy and Liverpool and Buriram football shirts. This was worth about eight million baht. The four people arrested face up to 4 years in jail or fines of 400,000 baht or both jail and fines. mike324
hard to believe only 1 shop got caught for fake goods in MBK, when pretty much more than half of the clothing shops are selling fake copies

JAG
Well I suppose now that the fuss over that chap who "was helped to die" by persons unknown whilst in DSI custody has died down they can get back to the really important stuff. Now all those people who buy their clothes in Pratunam will have to buy the genuine article....
kaiyaibob
Probably one of the few redeemable features Thailand has left for tourism....lets get rid of copies said no one except maybe the World Police :-) Edited September 30, 2016 by kaiyaibob
Yoram
I just love the tenacity and the zeal of the Thai government departments and agencies that embark on a treasure hunts every now and than for a big show and tell. in my many years in this country, I have heard that cry for action of fake goods and other merchandises sssooooo many times, it begin to have a life of its own. fruitman
Those brandnames caused this themselves. I'm pretty sure the fake goods came from the real factories.
Alive
The owners of the buildings, malls and areas where this piracy is taking place should face prison. All these big malls even some Big C and Lotus haev pirated goods shops in them. They need to face punishment. Nations whose citizens are victims of piracy can take direct action now by banning the owners, their families and connected staff from entry into their nations. Shut the corrupt property owners and corporations who own these properties out. Deny travel to them. They know they make money from this crime. waldroj
Simply priceless! The Diddly Squat Investigation team are a real farce to be reckoned with: failed miserably to arrest Phra Dhammachayo; couldn't find missing tigers from Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua; had no success with the people smuggling investigations in the south; couldn't pin anything on Somdet Chuang over his vintage Benz; and couldn't even protect Tawatchai Anukul from suffering a "mysterious" death while in their care! Now, it looks like they've been relegated to ironing out the bogus rag-trade that has flourished in Thailand for aeons. If nothing else, at least we can expect these guys will probably start looking well dressed from now on (how appropriate - fake clothes for fake cops). This cartoon of a building changing into a spirit house represents DSI changing from a respectful legal enforcing department to a mere nonsense spirit house that people cannot really rely on! cncltd1973
I know piracy isn't a victimless crime because I'm notified before I watch a DVD. But I imagine the victims as very wealthy.

z42
I personally don't see the problem with fake clothes etc, you get what you pay for. The real items are so hideously priced considering the craftsmanship and materials used in their production are not too dissimilar to the copies. If they were going to seriously tackle the problems, then why pick on selected shops. Practically entire floors on mbk and platinum are made up of stores selling knock offs. To do it the stall staff must be paying a fee to someone, go after the big profit takers rather than the lowly traders who really won't be making any serious money. As always the big fish remain untouched and the crackdown misses tackling the root cause by a country mile. Sad to see tbh

Your comment does not make sense. If Nike, pays a company to make shirts for them. It is Nike fault if the factory also makes fake shirts. Does the factory which makes cars for Honda in Thailand, also make fake Honda cars ?

The rich make political donations to campaigns and pay lobbyist to push politicians to press law enforcement to make arrests and get news coverage of same . yes, it's an illegal trade , however , I hate to see law enforcement resources going here when there is so much more serious crime to focus on ;like human trafficking or narcotics . Nike should check their factories after workinghours...Same goes for Honda...they might use their machines to produce something else, who knows? Also those companies should check where their B-choice ends up....it's easy to sew a new label in it and sell it as new.

They make billions already. This is only done for a show. They do one or two times per year. They find one shop at MBK ? One ?? Come on, do you really believe this ? Nike should buy their own factories if they care....and close them totally after workingtime...i bet Honda does the same. If you look at The North Face you'll see their brandname woven in every part of their jackets..that can only be done with the real machines i would think. But i goes much farther then this, i guess also hardware is copied and sold in BKK. I've seen fake Makita tools as well. They also ask for it by the way, they shouldn't sell a lower quality in Thailand which doesn't even have a ground cable connected but the same goes for Karcher. Wanted to buy a vacuumcleaner from them yesterday but the quality was far from what i expected so i didn't buy. Even a blind person can find copy copy in the MBK. Same goes for every other mall or market in BKK.

Nothing wrong with that if you advertise a products and brand and then others copy that.. that is theft.. I can understand it I don't buy the fake stuff because the quality sucks.
