NLA believes charter revision won't postpone election

BANGKOK, 2 October 2016 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) says the Constitutional Court’s verdict on the draft charter won't delay the general election. 

Surachai Liengboonlertchai, NLA first vice president, expressed his confidence that the ruling of the Constitutional Court which mandates that the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) amend the draft charter in accordance with the secondary question attached to the August 7 charter referendum, will not affect the time frame of the country’s roadmap and will certainly not push back the election date. 

Although the election date has yet to be decided, the prime minister earlier made known that general elections will be held late next year. 

The first vice president then called on all sides to accept the court’s verdict while brushing aside claims that the verdict allows an outsider to become prime minister easier. 

In response to public concerns about the composition of the Senate, he said members of the Senate who will be hand-picked by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will not destroy checks and balances, but rather will ensure a smooth reform transition.

Of course hand-picked Senators will destroy checks and balances, and prevent annoying opposition to the junta installing a government that serves the interests of the military and its supporters.  That's how it will ensure the smooth "reform" transition.

 

It's worth noting that the junta's idea of reform is preserving an archaic social, political and economic order.

Just 2 days ago: "The court also called for the new constitution to clearly state that an unelected prime minister can be nominated within the first 5 years of the new constitution."

So the CDC merely needs to amend the approved charter to reflect such provision.
