Has anybody crossed into Cambodia from Surin? and returned, is it possible for farang? I am not sure if it is an established border crossing, with passport control, stamps out/in?.Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes I used to do this every thirty days but now I am working in Bangkok, last did the run in Oct. 2006. About 45 mins from Surin and the area is Kap Chong and the actual border crossing is simple their. No hassels and a quick in and out. They do have a small market down at the bottom of the hill inside Cambodia if your'e into that and also if you go past the market and up the hill they have a few ENTERTAINMENT places.

There is also a market on the Thai side. Get with Martin from Farang connection he can give you a map and whatever else you may need. The 2 farang places are (Burirum) Bamboo Bar and (Surin) Martin's place Farang connection.

Recomend you look at the Issan forum on this web site. I have a home in Burirum (Krasang) but am not their due to job in Bangkok.

The border crossing is in Chong Chom, 12km further than the town of Kap Choeng, but everything else is as KhunDan states.

But I would not recommend the food cooked at either of the markets, it is dreadful, the catering in the Casino on the Cambodian side is much better.

To clarify still further, the Immigration Office is about 1 km north of Kap Cheong on the 214. The office has facilities for visa extensions but not, as far as I know, re-entry permits.

As stated, the actual border crossing is at Chong Chom, about 15 minutes drive south of Kap Cheong on the 214.

There is a good eating place down hill at the market, superb food, some of the best i have had in asia, finish it off with a black panther beer, 8.5 %, it is in one of the shop houses.

am i right to assume that a Cambodian visa can be issued at the border then?

Thanks for your help.nx

Yes, no problems.

Extra bit of info for you.

The visa for Cambodia is 1,100 Baht (make sure you have some passport sized photos). If you just want to walk in and walk back out again (departure office is on the opposite side of the road) they will expect another 300 Baht for that facility, if you stay in Cambodia for three days however, exit is free.

They have now removed all of the young kids with umbrellas shouting "1 Baht 1 Baht", but there are still a few of the older chaps who will offer to guide you through the paperwork, most of them are Ok in my experience and if you have never done it before it's 50 Baht well spent. The last few times I went, I always looked for the same chap (quite tall, always well dressed and descent haircut) and I used to pay him 50 B just to keep the other touts away from me.

Does anyone have any recent experience of using the Thai-Cambodia border crossing from Choam to Choam Sa Ngam, with the objective of getting to Siem Reap (from Si Saket province where I part-live)? I will have my Thai girlfriend with me and we will take a taxi to the border from our house - if I can find the border crossing!

My thinknet NorthEastern map of Thailand, normally so reliable, does not show any roads going to the border in the region I think this crossing is probably located. If I first do my own reccy drive along the 2341 from Kantaralak district will I find the turning signposted?

Lonely Planet seems to think it's easy to get to Anlong Veng and then to Siem Reap once you are in Cambodia and I guess there should be no flooding problems this time of year.

Any intelligence gratefully received. If I cannot find or trust this crossing then I guess we will have to bus it to Surin and take a minibus (according to LP these are faster than regular buses) down to Chong Jom. Just in case we use that route, if anyone knows where the minibuses go from in Surin that info would be well received also.

If this trip is successful I can see many of my visiting Brits wanting to tack on a Siem Reap jaunt from my place. It may also be more conveient for me to renew my own visa there in future, rather than Laos

Whilst in practice a photo is required, the Cambodian officials at Osmach will turn a blind eye to this; they've yet to receive a photo of mine, despite being told on each occasion to make sure I bring one next time. :o

Go to the site www.talesofasia.com=it has all he most recent info on all of Combodia's obverland border crosings, with full details of what transprot is available at both sides of broder. and to me it seems more a case of the taxidriver knowing where to go.....
