webfact
RAINY SEASON Storm on way but no major floods feared PRATCH RUJIVANAROM, TANATPONG KONGSAI THE NATION BANGKOK: -- AT LEAST ONE STORM is forecast to reach Thailand by next week, weather experts said yesterday, but the Royal Irrigation Department assured the public the flood situation in the country had improved and was under control. Sanchai Ketworrachai, RID director-general, said flooding in the Central Plain had eased, as the water level in the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya continued to fall by 1 centimetre per hour and the situation should soon be back to normal soon. Buntham Tinglamlert of the Meteorological Department said that although the Central region would get more heavy rain this week, it would come from a monsoon trough and not the storm. HoboKay
The operative word being "major"? So it is flooding and just not major by their standards. Sounds reasonable?

fish monger
Excuse me, BUT......If my vehicle is submerged up to the damn windows, that's what many would consider a major flood...!
williamgeorgeallen
anything over half way up the wheel arches looks like a fairly major flood to me. have to wonder if they are driving around with there water up to their ankles in their cars. is there still mains power in the buildings? NongKhaiKid
Nothing to worry about and little action until the ' water waiting to drain away ' starts to really threaten Bkk.

Perhaps their reason for having overhead utilities cables is to ensure power during floods? Thai ingenuity.

That could be their reason but underground cables are not effected by water.

I wonder have they thought about the storm jumping on top of the monsoon trough? Judging by the water on the roads this morning (Phitsanulok) after only about 4 hours rain, it won't take much to make it a major issue. River Nan is running pretty high but would have a bit to go before it would burst. Not quite to this level yet..................
Eligius
I long ago gave up bothering with what Thai weather forecasters predict - as, in my experience, they are nearly always wrong. Might just as usefully toss a coin into the air and guess on the outcome!
