BANGKOK, 8 October 2016 (NNT) – The national legislature has endorsed in principle a new Anti-Drug Abuse Bill, determined to ensure fairness in the application of drug penalties.

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has approved in principle the draft act written by NLA member Admiral Sithawat Wongsuwan and his team. The new bill would allow alleged drug users to prove that they had no intention of selling the drugs and that the possession of illicit drugs was only for self-consumption.

According to the drafting team, the anti-drug abuse law currently in force is not “appropriate” as it doesn’t allow perpetrators to defend themselves.

The draft act received 175 votes in favor while 4 lawmakers abstained.

It's very odd that such a prudish and conservative government would relax drug laws ...

That's a valid point, but the children of politicians and the rich always get let off when they break the law. There is always 'insufficient evidence', witnesses refuse to testify, money changes hands to pay people off, people are intimidated and shut up, etc. The laws are there to keep the rest of us under control.

Perhaps the government thinks that stoned people will not bother to get involved in any political opposition? But if that were so, then why the crackdowns on alcohol?
