They randomly test Thais all the time both on raids at specific bars/clubs and at street checkpoints.

Can you tell me why you dislike  foreigners so much when all those foreigners put so much money in to thailand and you and you not a foreigner or are you thai ?.

My experiences with BKK goes back 3 decades. I've lived and worked there, happy as a Lark. Circa 1992, a policeman rode past me and stopped. He beckoned me forth, squeezed my biceps, called me Rambo, thumbs up, big  laugh together and we both went about our business. Visiting BKK last week each time I saw a uniform I expected the worst. No matter what the rose tinted brigade say, TL has very much changed for the worst. Sad really.

You would be very disappointed if you went to your home country too I'm sure. The world is going crazy, and its not because of the cops.

Increased security before an important summit - I get that.  The urine tests - completely out of bounds, demeaning and embarrassing for tourists, this does not make sense and presents LOS as a place not to visit.

Cambodia looking better and better as time goes  by ....

What about all the TRASH Tourists that come here and cause problems for ALL of us.

Good to see the crack down IMHO.

If you don't do wrong you have no reason to worry.

Ya, tell us again after you are stopped and asked to publicly piss in a cup. I have never heard of such treatment of tourists in any other country.

People have been saying that for years. Hasn't happened yet, has it?

Lots of farangs are caught with drugs, that's a good enough reason to target them in the street with searches and, if necessary, urine testing.

If it's good enough for the blacks in soi 3, it's good enough for the whites milling around the sex areas of an evening.

Well things take time you know. Please remember that as the world population grows so should tourism numbers. When tourism drops off no one can say why. But if a country treats all tourists (both white and black) like this, word will definitely get out.

Now you are showing me that you do not understand this country. You will probably have a better life with the family you bring home in the states.
I am not saying it is right, but it´s Thailand and the authorities have always been wanting more money out of the foreigners than the thai people.
They also always been wanting a bribe to extend their pay check.

For it to be possible to live in a country you must be read in. You must accept the culture and the behaivior of people in different situations.
You must also anderstand how things are done, not what stands in the good book. For people that can not accept that, there is no place in Thailand.
For your information there are many more countries in the world that have different way of doing things, and you can never come as an outsider
to another country, live there and expect them to change for you.

Just accept it. In one way or not you have to do that for be able to stay. If not just find a better place on earth.

Yes. Don't try to change the world, just accept it. The same way the Thai people accept that the military can take over the country and everyone is happy. The same way that the poor respect the wealthy that have stolen everything from them. And when you see a man kicking a child, accept that too.

Farangs are the ones buying the drugs off the African dealers in Lower Sukhumvit.

If it's ok to racially profile the dealers, it's ok to racially profile the buyers.

Wonderful equality

Thailand has a huge drug problem with Yaba. Thais are the main users. If you want equality with racial profiling, then you should want the Thai people to be tested.

And really, if you want to solve your own country's drug problems, why bother with tourists who will be gone in two weeks. Or is it really all about baht?

Endf an era, my friends.  The Thailand we used to know is no more.

Nowhere Is the same, not even your home country.

I recall, many years ago when Singapore was sin city, then LKY decreed It needed 'cleaning up', and so It was.

Next was Hong Kong, great place, but was 'cleaned up.'

Bangkok/Thailand then attracted the seedy types, and now it's Thailand's time.

Enter Cambodia, few rules, bribing is normal, etc.

Within a few years, the expats In Cambodia will be complaining along similar lines.

Not all change Is good, or to your liking, BUT CHANGE IS INEVITABLE!!!

I know I'll be criticized, but it is the Thai's country, and as a foreigner living in another's country and attempting to change, or stand up against, their laws, is making a rod for your own back.  There will be only one loser, YOU!  Think Andy Hall here.  I agree we need campaigners, but they will, at times, pay a heavy price.  Back home, no big deal; in another's country, particularly one like Thailand, BIG DEAL.

The point to remember about Thailand is that all sides of politics think along the same lines, and there are no lefties, chardonnay socialists, or bleeding hearts to oppose what you may see as unjust, as there are back home, wherever that is.  This is Thailand, still the wild west compared with the US, UK, Australia, etc.  If you can't accept that, you are indeed in the wrong place, and will be constantly frustrated.

It is NOT your RIGHT to be here, believe it or not.  You are here at the 'invitation' of the Thai government, be that as a tourist, a work permit, marriage visa, etc., and that can change with a pen stroke, and there is not a damned thing you can do about it.

But on another thread, the same suspects, the perpetual whiners, are complaining about the BiB doing over Soi Nana and only interrogating blacks, the ills of social profiling, etc.  Now it's tourists generally, and they are STILL complaining.

Beats me.  I suppose when I think about it, it doesn't really beat me.   The whiners have little else to do, so take up a 'cause' from the safety of their keyboard.  Find yourself a hobby, learn a musical instrument,  travel within Thailand, or regionally (there's plenty to see), read something other than a forum populated by so many like minded individuals.......to quote a cliche, it ain't rocket science.  Don't waste your life complaining about something over which you have NO control.  To do otherwise is as frustrating as trying to push $hit uphill with a straw broom.

I almost forty years of visiting Thailand, and living there for a time, I have never had a problem with the police, never been asked for a driving licence, or a passport, so perhaps it has something to do with the areas you frequent, the company you keep, or reasons of which I'm not aware.  Compare that with Indonesia, where every visit I am the victim of a scam attempt by the police over some triviality, never big numbers, and seldom paid, but an inconvenience nevertheless.  Why do I visit?  I like the place, and if that's a price to pay, then that's the way it is.  I won't change it in a dozen lifetimes.

Chill out folks, roll with the punches, and enjoy life.   It's too short to do otherwise.

Just because it doesn't happen around Asoke or Thonglor where farangs can see doesn't mean Thais aren't regularly stopped and tested.

It's worth bothering tourists because they're the ones keeping the dealers in Lower Sukhumvit in business.

Why should the authorities turn a blind eye to farang drug use just because they'll be gone in couple of weeks?

How do they know who's a tourist and who's a migrant?

Farangs need to stop complaining about the erosion of farang privilege.

It was never, ever deserved and its demise has been predictably expedited by the boorish, crass behaviour of a few that have tarnished the image and reputation of the many.

The police in the soi 3 raid had good reason to believe there'd be lots of drug dealers in the vicinity so they took it down.

Similarly, they police know that Thais don't buy off those dealers - only farangs do so they figure that if they stop and search a few white people in and around the area, they're bound to catch a few with drugs either in their system or in their pockets.

I posted quite a few times on that soi 3 thread but my beef was with the bigots who said that ALL black people in Lower Sukhumvit are drug dealers.

I didn't see a problem with them stopping and searching African males in that area.

My beef in this thread is with those who seem to believe that stopping and searching tourists/migrants is tantamount to harassment when they know it's white people buying the drugs.

It's ok to racially profile blacks but not whites?

Pure BS......search/test the b'stards and if they've got drugs on or in them, prosecute and deport in short order.

No preferential treatment should be given to them.

I'd partially agree if the first stage tests wouldn't give false positives for red bull white shark etc... Road side piss test is not my idea of policing, nor upholding the law, but as intimidating tourists and expats to all degrees. Read my post on the aforementioned topic re; spider bite

EDIT: also how would a first time comer(tourist) who gets a cheap hotel know without ever hearing of it? Being labeled as criminal on your first night out might make you feel quite unwelcome - most people just look at rooms and their rates, maybe read a few reviews online before booking - go checkout reviews from soi 3 :)

I have no reason also as a tourist to be seen as a potential criminal when so much country consider me as a genuine tourist.

I am going to search your ass mr tourist , but dont worry you will be alright if you are a genuine tourist... Is that the way you welcome people that come here to spend money?

Well done. Safety over all  ?

Go home.  Climb into bed.  Pull the overs up.   OK now just stay there.  No.  Don't turn the television on.  Don't touch your cellphone.   Stay away from the PC.  Sleep.  Meditate.  Keep counting your fingers & toes.  Pretend you're a potato.  Whatever.   You'll be quite safe.

Voilà.  "Safety over all."

Meanwhile, the rest of us want to go about leading normal lives free from Big Brother looking over our shoulder and making us prove our innocence at every turn, thanks.

Oh yeah...

If you think, or even hope, that will happen you are delusional.

A very small number are actually tested, frisked, or even looked at sideways by police.

When It's happening outside hotels, rather than one seedy area, Nana, give me a call.

Not delusional to hope. Didn't say I think.

Your pathetically blinkered, 'very small number' includes head-kicked old ladies and taxi scammed victims in their droves greater than your imagination for the wider picture, one that tells me Thailand needs time out from tourists.

Actually many tourists stopped coming to Thailand as soon as the military took over the country & installed martial law.

Many others whether married to Thai...already living here & of course the sexpats...continue to come

But really if you can read Thai & have kept up with Thai sites like Pantip then they know what all the Thai business folks

have been saying for 2 years already

The slide started slow but is now seriously painful to merchants

It is not unlike economic other crisis's that have occurred in other countries over time

Starts slow then as it get worse folks get more cautious of spending ....both local Thai's & foreigners then they spend less.

It is self fulfilling add to that this Junta occurred right at the tail of a stretch of irrational exuberance in Thailand

by developers & banks alike building too much...lending too much....& you now have a recipe for a possible total collapse with or without tourists.

I wish them well I do but they are shooting themselves in the foot constantly now & in the end it will be up to the Thai people themselves

to put a halt to it all...if not then they have the government   junta they deserve

I was in the UK for a long visit earlier this year and of course it had changed considerably. Funny thing is, I was stopped by the police a couple of times in my youth, but never since.....although I did get busted for doing 35mph in a 30mph zone, caught by camera. When I was sent the summons I explained I'm living in Phnom Penh and they let me off with a warning .

Yes Cambodia is looking better all the time......to the piss heads, junkies, human traffickers, paedophiles, serial sexpats, criminals on the run and general misfits.

Give it a couple of years for news of the unsavoury behaviour of those who find Thailand's tightening immigration rules too uncomfortable to start making its way over the news wires.

Dark skinned tourists..now TOURISTS...WHY IN EARTH SHOULD ANYONE ON COUPLE OF DAYS HOLIDAY IN BKK GET STOPPED AND SEARCHED AND SUBMIT TO HUMILIATING URINE TESTS IN THE STREET? ?

I would indeed object and see how it goes.Yes they might spike it..Long ago I went to stay at a hotel behing khaosan Rd.at 1am a French fellow went across to buy few cans of beer.30 minutes later he returned, when I asked the reasonfor the delay he said the cops stopped and searched him without any reason.

Knowing myself I would have got into trouble as I would have strongly objected. I hadvtaken the easy way out and never went there again.

So many tourists would not return and may advise others to skip Thailand ?
