China says Thailand made decision to block HK activist's visit

LONDON: -- It was the Thai government that made a decision to block the entry to Thailand of a Hong Kong student activist last week, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Monday.

Bespectacled Joshua Wong, 19, who helped organise pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in 2014, was detained in Bangkok where he had been invited to speak at universities about Hong Kong's "Umbrella Movement" protests and on setting up his political party.

The case raised fresh questions about mainland interference in Hong Kong, which though part of China is meant to enjoy considerable autonomy under a "one country, two systems" formula, and about Chinese influence on Thailand's military government.

But will Thailand bend over again and agree to this statement?

So to put simply, military spokemanLG Sansern lied when he said the deportation was on China's request. Not a trustworthy spokesman. Wonder how many lies he told in the past.

Find it rather easy to believe that somebody fairly high up in the Chinese government placed a call to Thailand asking them to bar the activist.  Then China denies it.  Thailand had 10 officers waiting for this rather scrawny, 19 year old male.   Once again, the junta is made to look offish and foolish.

There are so many liars in this case its hard to arrive at the truth. He said she said. Neither country has a stellar reputation but both have the same goals. Good old China a shepherd and its flock.

A task they excel at! It's so bad that I sometimes wonder if it's intentional, instead of being the result of incompetence run amok.

You make a fair point. However China would need not ask Thailand to bar him outright (and risk getting their hands dirty). They could just 'request' Thailand 'look into the matter'. Thailand would of course know what was meant...

And again...The Dog Ate My Homework"!!!!!

What they carefully say is that the Thai Govt made the decision.

What they carefully don't say is that the Thai Govt made the decision at the Chinese Govt.'s request.

Sneaky, very sneaky.

Believable and here is why. If they wanted they would have stopped him leaving Hong Kong. Would have been low profile.

On the other hand it could have sparked more demonstrations had the Chinese government done that.

If Thailand did they would be helping China. China doesn't really care what the world thinks as does Thailand.  Difference is China has far more power in the world than Thailand.

I would go for Thailand being the one to send him back not China. If he was allowed into Thailand he may start a demonstration.
