BANGKOK: -- PRIME MINISTER General Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday ordered relevant agencies to determine the cause of the recent multiple deaths of giant freshwater stingrays.

Meanwhile, Samut Songkhram officials are planning to set up a "war room" to coordinate efforts to establish whether a toxic wastewater substance is responsible.

At least 49 stingrays have been found dead in the Mae Klong River in recent weeks. "Giant freshwater stingrays must be protected. They are indicators of abundance," Prayut said yesterday after emerging from the Cabinet meeting.

I thought for a moment Prayut was interested in death rays. That would have been interesting.

Micro-managing something that really doesn't need his input.

Doesn't he trust any of his officials to bother with their jobs or is it just to make him look good, exhibiting leadership etc. ?

Now what about some of the bigger issues that he has said on several occasions that he's happy to leave to the agencies involved ?

A few politicians washing their dirty laundry in the river perhaps ?

an act of god ?

a curse from disenchanted encroachment land owners ?

pollution and contaminates being released ?

suicide ?

I will await the findings and become a believer ?

A "war room" required, hey dumbest,  just send a few lazy <deleted> down to collect water samples, then have them tested, no need to waste time on "war rooms" or are you hoping rains will flush out the river so no one face charges, so far 2 weeks and no action.

Everything has to sound so dramatic to prove something's being done whereas sometimes nothing could be further from the truth.

Wonder if this ' war cabinet ' will adopt the Chalerm / Tarit model and order in the very best of food and drink ?

If these rays wear socks a finding of mass suicide would clear the matter up nicely.

Hope they find out why these amazing creatures are dying.  Sadly, it is probably pesticides or industrial runoff.  Hope if there is an investigation that the investigators do not feel the need to flee the country.

The first thing they need to do is have a correct name

for the Rays, yesterday they were calling them Manta Rays,

a marine species.

Also note that yellow is indicated as rescued and the red as dead. Who would have thought.

         ?

War room? Was he drunk?

"They are indicators of abundance," Prayut said yesterday after emerging from the Cabinet meeting.

So 49 dead must mean the current situation is lacking that little ray of sunshine.

They are indicators of abundance, Prayut said.....

And yet 60 Rays died and ho one lift a finger until today ....

Right on Nongkhaikid. Christopher Hitchens had a good term for this sort of leader: micromeglomaniac

It's actually Frito Lays.

I do think that the prime minister is setting a very good example - that is displaying leadership - by trying to protect the giant freshwater rays and by calling for action regarding the question of the cause(s) of them dying in worrying numbers. Perhaps this could result in better environmental protection for all. Hopefully there will be follow-up, effective action to curb environmental pollution which is the suspected cause of the deaths.

No doubt many of the dead rays found there way to the local fish markets...

I would wager the problem is a sudden change in water temperatures.

Steve Irwin's Ghost !

yet another example of how Thailand's attitude to the environment is always retro-active rather than proactive.

The problem was not prevented by regulation and monitoring and now the ray population is devastated to the point it will take decades to recover.....and that is assuming that the cause is discovered and prevented and similar incidents don't happen in the future......

They seem undisturbed by the prospect of turing the Kingdom's natural resources into a lifeless cesspit.

Do you think that if they had not been "ordered" the "relevant agencies" (and the relevant agencies who get "ordered" concerning other issues) would have just shrugged their shoulders and then carried on picking their noses?

Are they so incompetent?  Is the system so broken and dysfunctional that this has to be done?  Is the alleged "leadership" so very ill-equipped to re-build and manage a functioning system, thus obviating the "need" for such "Decrees"?

Possibly yes.  But don't the efforts, of The Dear "Leaders" press office, to make him appear to be on "on top" of every issue (in the way that Napoleon was alleged to be) just re-enforce the image that he has already created for himself, and make him appear to be exactly what it is claimed he is not?

A person who stands over everyone with a whip, threatening all who contradict them, is not a leader.  They are something quite different.

You nailed perfectly!    Just like their soaps all has to look drama.....

"War room"   mindset of a military....what else can you expect

Nothing subliminal there now eh.... ? 5555

" Indicators of abundance "......He said.  Abundance of what, pray tell....? Honing those micro management skills....

...another travesty....

...another disgrace....

...oh yeah....no one to blame.....

...everything 'just happens'......

Why do dept heads have to be ordered to do their jobs? What cushy jobs they have....zero initiative to do the right thing...

such a a culture of lacking problem solving skills...they should be fired for not showing leadership and accountability...

a very vicious mindset to break...same same for the 17 years that I have lived here....
