Multiple tourist visa is RETURN air ticket needed?

Featured Replies

Im British

British embassy says they need a copy of air ticket TO thailand. It doesn't mention RETURN ticket. Do i need to show a return ticket? Or an onward ticket? Or just a one way ticket is needed?

Im assuming they don't need a hotel reservation for the entire 6 months of stay in Thailand?

A current passport with validity of over 6 months beyond the date of application
     -  A completed application from
     -  Two (2) recent (2 x 2 inches.) photographs of the applicant
     -  Original bank stament of the applicant showing a blance of least 5000 puonds ( for 6 months)
or a print out with official stamp of the bank
     -  A letter from the applicant's employer ( in the UK and addressed to the Royal Thai Embassy)
If you are self-employed, you self assessment and a copany registration doument are required
     -  A photocopy of the confirmed Air ticket to Thailand
     -  A photocopy of the hotel reservation confirmation in Thailand

A return ticket is not required to get the visa according to their requirements. If they did want a ticket a onward ticket would be accepted.

You do not need a return or onward ticket to board your flight or enter the country since you will have a valid visa.

Thanks. Yes I know i don't need it to board the flight with a multiple entry visa. I was thinking more about the return flight needed to get the actual visa from embassy

  • You only need a one way ticket.
  • No they don't want hotel reservations for the whole 6 months. They want one for your arrival to Thailand, or a letter form the person you are staying with.

This is kind of funny because even though a person has a visa, it is a tourist type of visa and normally some proof of future exiting of the country is needed for touristing.

Thailand requires no such "proof".

Perhaps you could helpfully list those countries that do.

I never said that Thailand requires proof.  In some circumstances some airlines do.  In some circumstances some Thailand officials definitely have.  In some cases some Thai embassies clearly state:  "Australian passport holders (and nationals from 45 designated countries) may travel to Thailand for the purpose of tourism without a visa. They will be permitted to stay for a period not exceed 30 days on each visit provided they arrive by air and have a confirmed ticket out of Thailand (by air, land, or sea) within 30 days."

I was simply originally pointing out that tourists in general are expected to NOT remain in the country and that proof of onward travel or future exiting is sometimes required.

For those arriving in Thailand without a visa with the intent of using the "visa exempt" scheme the requirement to have an onward flight within 30 days  is clear and detailed by the MFA.

Possession of a valid visa negates the need for evidence of onward travel arrangements.

Check for yourself.

The same IATA database is used by most airlines.

they do make you jump through hoops for a multi entry tourist. but one of the hoops is not a return ticket
