One year in Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I’m looking at staying in Thailand for one year to complete some self-study and have some time away from home and wanted some help in understanding visa requirements.

After looking around the forum I noticed SETV or METV look like the ones for me. Question is how I would use these to my advantage to stay for one year, including any travel to borders, neighbouring countries, costs etc.

I noticed the visas say “valid for 3/6 months” yet also says “permitted to stay 60days” - So if I’m permitted to stay for 60 days I can extend this to additional 30days and make it 90 days. If that’s how it works once I reach the end of my 90 days can I get the same visa’s over again until I complete a year?

ie: go to Thailand on 60 day visa, extend another 30 days , leave just before expiry and re apply for Multi entry visa again, rinse and repeat ?

Or is it actually 3 / 6 months stay and the permitted bit is something else entirely?

My Concern is if I rent a place for a year and something happens where I can’t stay longer than my visa requirements I lose money on the place I rented. Obvious thing would be to rent for however long you stay but I would much prefer peace of mind at this point.

I will be traveling from Sydney on a AU passport as well.

Cheers.

I really need a gap year....... but I want to make it a productive one also, then maybe I can bang me some bar grills. And by self study I meant just studying online from variety of courses not actually enroll in a school or anything. I don't think it would count towards a "Educational Visa" since you need letters and other documents required such as letter from school etc.

3/6 months VALIDITY means the period from issue that you can use the visa to enter the country.  No matter whether you enter on the first or last day of the period you will get 60 days permission to stay.  This can be extended by 30 days at immigration.  You will not get an METV anywhere other than Australia unless you have residence elsewhere.

I'd say if you can get an METV in Aus do that and enter as soon as you can after issue.  If your final entry on that visa is close to the expiry date you'll be able to get almost 270 days out of it if you extend the final entry.  Leaving and getting a SETV locally (Penang, Vientiane, etc) will allow you another 60+30 days in country so you'll be close to your 1 year.

A single entry tourist visa is valid to use for entry for 3 months from the date of issue and a multiple entry tourist visa is valid for 6 months.

A single entry tourist visa allows one 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days at immigration. After that you have to get a new visa.

A METV allows unlimited 60 day entries up to the enter before date on the visa (6 months from date of issue). Each entry can be extended for 30 days. By using the visa to another 60 day on or before the enter before date and getting the 30 day extension of it you can get almost 9 months of total stay from it.

After the 9 months possible from the METV ends you could get a SETV at a nearby embassy or consulate to get a total stay of almost one year.

Staying for one year on single entry tourist visas should be no problem. There are some costs involved in traveling to consulates in nearby countries to apply for new visas (and optionally costs for 30-day extensions) but trips to places like Penang, Phnom Penh, Vientiane and Ho Chi Minh City should be enjoyable if you have never visited them before.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone, appreciate it. So on the Thai consulate website I will be choosing "Tourist Visa" and either"Single Entry" or "Multiple Entries" - Is this the right page ?

So it will look something like this:

Extensions included.

Jan -  Mar    =90 Days (METV)
April -June  = 90 Days (METV)
July - Sep    = 90 Days (METV Finishes and leave country for new VISA to Penang/Vientiane?)
Oct - Nov     = 60 Days (SETV)

Total so far : 330 Days

-Can I get 30 day extension upon arrival or close to expire date only ?

-How many times will I actually need to leave Thailand - Once or twice to make the year ?

I see four visits to immigration for each 30 Day extension.

It wont be perfect dates like this I imagine but some where close to that.

I'm just trying to map this out visually so I can plan for it as much as I can if this is going to work out.

Did I leave anything out ?

Cheers.

You get the extension at the end of the entry, the last week or so.  You will need to leave three times, at the end of each 90 day stay.  Four visits to immigration for the extensions.

You need "Form A" for the METV application (don't overlook the financial requirement for the METV, >AUD8,000 in the bank).

Wow thank you, this is great.  I definitely won't over look the financial part as I got that covered. However I'm wondering how realistic and achievable are the dates that I listed for METV?

Can you say for certain that this will work out smoothly or I'll need to adjust a few things along the way such as dates etc ?

hi potatoe head, you dont need to do the 30 day extensions every time. you can just do border runs every 60 which works out slightly cheaper.  If your around Pattaya, Cambodia is just a day trip.  A trip costs about 2500 baht.  A visa extension is 1900baht

i.e

Jan -  Feb    =60 Days (METV) border run
March -April  = 60 Days (METV) border run
May- Jun    = 60 Days (METV) border run (make sure to leave country on visa expiry not last border stamp date)
July - August     = 60 Days

September = 30 day extension.

I am not sure the easiest way to get a SETV.

The Thai consulate in Sydney is easy to get your METV visa.  You just need your photo and application fee, you can download the pdf from the website and prefill it to make it quicker.  It takes 3 working days to get your visa back.  Just make sure it doesnt fall on a Thai holiday.   I have received many visas from this office including a METV 6 months ago without any financial requirements / plane tickets or hotel reservations.

The number of days is close. You may not be able get 90 days from you last entry since you will need to do it on or before the enter before date on your visa that is 6 months from the date the visa was issued.

Uptonover is correct, I just checked the new regulations and a bank balance of $8000  is a requirement.

Yeah a friend just pointed that out to me actually which is why I was asking. It seems the safest option would be 6months, then go else where.

@BigT73 Thanks for laying the dates again . I actually don't mind the extension if it means I can sit longer in one place, I think it works out to be $70 AU each extension x 3 or 4. I have not actually factored in costs for border runs or traveling out of Thailand Just yet as I wanted to get the visa details and dates down before I did.  I think that will be the next step for the moment.

I think that there is some confusion here.  If you get a METV from Australia which is good for six months, you will only be able to use it for two ninety-day stays assuming that you extend each sixty-day permission of stay for thirty days at immigration.  When your second ninety-day period expires, your METV six month period of effectiveness will probably have expired also.  The only way I can see it working is if you enter Thailand within a day or two of getting your visa so that you can squeeze 180 days in before the effectiveness of the visa expires or if you cut your second period of stay a little short so that you can exit and re-enter before the expiration date of the visa.  In the first case, you would get two ninety-day permissions of stay but would have to obtain two SETV in a neighboring country to bring your total period of stay to 360 days.  In the second case, you could get one ninety-day period of stay and one period of stay somewhat shorter, say fifty days so that you could get in a third entry before your six month visa expires.  Understand that the effective period of the visa begins when it is stamped into your passport.  It is not six months trom the day that you first enter Thailand.  If, for example the visa is stamped into your passport on December 25th, 2016, it will effective until June 25th, 2017.  If you were to enter on January 5th, 2017, your visa would be effective for only about another 169 days, so within that period of time you could get in two ninety-day periods of stay  or three periods of stay that would total less than 270 days.  Probably you would find two ninty-day periods of stay using the METV and two using two SETV to give you the approximately one year that you are looking for.  Actually, with the time in other countries that you would need to spend applying for and obtaining the two SETV, it would probably work out to be around 365 days or a little more.

Good luck on your one-year time out / self-study period.
