BANGKOK: --  The National Police chief has called for calm in the wake of cases where people have attacked those deemed to be defaming the monarchy.

Jakhrathip Chaijinda speaking yesterday said that the people must not take the law into their own hands, reports Sanook.

"Don't argue or use violence against one another," he implored. "Let the police handle it".

He said that while most people are of a similar mind there are always some people who have differing views and at a time like this upset can be caused. He said that people who do not listen to reason will be arrested.

He told reporters at a briefing yesterday that police are pursuing 12 cases of lese majeste after posts were made online. He said there have been two arrests, 8 warrants are being issued and two more are in the process of investigation.

About people defaming the monarchy posting abroad he said that police were "on the case".

At the briefing Jakrathip also addressed several other issues.

Answering questions regarding five vehicles that were suspected of being car bombs in the capital he played down the issue saying that such reports were "normal".

He gave no details of where the suspected vehicles were parked or if they were towed.

He said that police were on top of the matter and the public could be assured that everything was being done to maintain their security. He asked people to continue to be vigilant but not to panic as the authorities were in control of the situation.

Reports came last week that a terror cell was in Bangkok planning car bomb attacks at key installations.

Jakrathip also commented on a raid in Ramkhamhaeng where 5 suspects were rounded up. He said that two of these might be linked to a bombing outrage in Narathiwat in 2011 according to DNA evidence. All those arrested were understood to be associates of Ahami Chali.

Regarding the police sealing off areas in Regions 3 and 4 of the capital recently he said that this was drug related. He said that 114 suspects had been arrested.

In relation to this matter he stressed that it was normal police work and the public had no need to be alarmed.
