Mourners’ weekend influx complicates traffic conditions around Sanam Luang

BANGKOK, 23 October 2016 (NNT) - Traffic conditions around the Sanam Luang area of Bangkok have been difficult following an increase in the number of people, who have traveled to pay their respects to HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

As Thailand started a long weekend, more people arrived in Bangkok, particularly at the Mo Chit bus terminal, to visit the Grand Palace and to join the filming of a new music video of the Royal Anthem, around Sanam Luang.

At the city’s main Hua Lamphong railway station, large numbers of travelers continue to arrive from other provinces before getting on free buses, provided by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority and various other companies, as well as volunteer motorcycle taxi services to reach Sanam Luang.

Mourners have been reassured by the presence of police and military officers as well as volunteers.

Meanwhile, more mourners have been arriving at Victory Monument to access free transport services to pay their respects to the late monarch.

Despite the absence of private vehicles around the old quarter of Bangkok, traffic conditions have been relatively heavy and are expected to worsen as the long weekend continues.
