I have a non-imm OA "retirement visa" and extension of stay. I intend travelling a lot next year outside Thailand, is there a minimum number of days I have to be in Thailand before I apply for my next extension in August 2017? Many thanks.

There is no minimum stay requirement but you must return in good time to renew your extension of syay.

Contradictory.

 

Sounds like your Non O-A has expired and you have got a one year extension from Thai immigration.

 

You can travel as long and as often as you like pretending you apply for a multiple re-entry permit (3800 Baht) before leaving.

If you happen to return after the expiry of the extension (=re-entry permit) you start over from scratch (30 day entry).
