Tributes paid to Poole (UK) man killed in motorcycle crash in Cambodia

Featured Replies

A MAN from Poole has died following a motorcycle crash in Cambodia.

Phil Powell's body was discovered by Cambodian Police officers on Saturday morning in the Sihanouk Province, on the very western edge of the country.

The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between 3-3.30am on Saturday morning.

Mr Powell’s cousin, Michael Stuart, called him “an incredible man who lived life to the fullest”.

“You will be missed dearly my man,” he said.

Mr Powell, 43, is understood to have been living at an address in Poole Road in Branksome.

According to the Cambodian media agency Nokorwat News, witnesses at the scene told police officers that Mr Powell was seen riding without a helmet in rainy conditions before colliding with the wall.

It is understood he died instantly. He was riding an Air Blade black edition motorcycle at the time of the collision. No other vehicle is believed to have been involved in the crash.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Cambodia on October 22. We are providing support to the family.”

According to a report by the World Health Organisation in 2013, 2,400 people are killed every year in road traffic collisions on Cambodian roads. Around 70 per cent of those killed are motorcyclists.

Mr Powell’s body was taken to the provincial hospital in Sihanouk ahead of transportation to the British Embassy, based in Phnom Penh.

Mr Stuart has also called on friends of his cousin to send him them their favourite pictures of him. He hopes to launch a memorial website dedicated to Mr Powell so that "friends and family all over the world have a place to visit and remember him".

Tobias Ellwood, Bournemouth East MP and Foreign Office Minister, said: “It is with deep regret that I can confirm the death of a British national in Cambodia on October 22.

“We are providing consular support to the family.”
