320 illegal Cambodian longan pickers arrested in Sa Kaeo

SA KAEO: -- Police and soldiers arrested more than 300 Cambodian longan pickers on Monday in a raid in the Sa Kaeo area.

 

The workers had illegally crossed from Chanthaburi province where they were registered to work.

 

They are not allowed to work outside where they are registered but were found picking in orchards in the Klong Hat area of the north eastern province.

 

They had been ferried in to the province in 18 pick-ups and the Thai drivers of these were all arrested along with the organizer of the expedition.

 

It was explained that the workers had done this before and there had been no arrests. But this time the authorities had acted.

 

A total of 320 Cambodian pickers were involved.

just wonder if they will now be able to find 320 Thais eager to pick Longans for 150 Baht a day or so.....  or rather let the fruits rot forever ?

Not as important as not knowing where they stand.

they need to find some magical whitening cream that will allow thais to work outside without getting brown. ferang sunscreen does not seem to work for them.

Yes, some irony in the fact that there are large numbers of Thai pickers working in Europe...most notably Portugal...where they are highly regarded and valued, and yet Thai farmers find it difficult to recruit locally. All about $$$

Australia was on the verge of introducing a prohibitively high tax rate for backpacking farm workers but backed down in the face of lobbying by farmers: it's impossible to get unemployed locals to do this kind of work.

At least it is reported that the people organizing this trip is arrested as well.

Not sure if they ever will be charged with anything, but at least a first step.

Why would you think that the BiB would have any interest whatsoever, into arresting the one which presumably ratted out all these incredibly dangerous and terrible terrible criminals, just before their wages was due???

And all the Thai "ladies of the night" who are in every city in Europe working illegal in professions who even have to pay tax??

 

Do those cambodians also have to pay the fee for not telling the police where they stay? 4000 baht each iirc.

Actually,they were not illegal workers,just working outside the area

that they were supposed to stay in,any excuse to levy some fines,

doubt the farmer will be able to find 320 Thais to do the work

before the fruit rots on the trees.

That is all over the world.. in my country even the unemployed don't want to do this work.. The government cant force them because if they do they just make sure the farmer has a tough time in how they work.. they work extra slow and so on. 

• Has been a very large issue in California for decades.  Some years things flare up, then things quiet down for a while.

A common practice in the building trade was/is to employ vast numbers for a month of slave labour & arrange a similar raid just before pay day.

Earnings of less than 150,000 baht per annum are tax free in Thailand: http://www.expatfocus.com/expatriate-thailand-taxation

Bars usually pay them a salary of between 8,000 and 10,000 baht a month + commission for selling lady drinks. Any extracurricular activities they perform aren't considered to be part of their job and won't be declared for tax purposes.

 

I often wonder how many of these girls will live to a ripe old age and how many will succumb to liver disease before they're 50 years old even.

It seems unfair on the Cambodians since how are they to know that the trucks are going to be taking them to farm somewhere which are going to be outside their legal working area.

Pattaya is NOT in Europe mate, that's where the Thai girls work as "rentals" without permits. And that's where they have to pay tax if they do get a permit to work.....

 

I wonder how many of those girls have HIV and contaminated their clients......
