UPDATE! Buying un-taxed and un-insured motorbike

Featured Replies

After being stopped last week at police check point for motorbike not being taxed or insured for the last three years (which I just purchased and back paid the tax and insurance). My documents arrived yesterday (5 days), so I presented myself to soi 9 Beach Road Police Station with all the documents.

Waited in-line maybe 5 minutes then produced the police ticket and the police officer said that's 700 baht. I thought 'Oh, yer we go'. I asked why. She said no tax or insurance on motorbike. I explained that I did have it and paid for it ten minutes (if that) before the police officer stopped me, and I showed him my receipt etc... Well, they checked the date of the police officers ticket...19/10/2016, date of the receipt 19/10/2016...Now here's the problem...the date of the registration, insurance and tax 20/10/2016. One day later. I tried and tried to explain that it was because the company I purchased every thing from didn't produce my application on the 19/10/2016 at the Transport Land Office, but I had purchased every thing on the 19/10/2016. Well, she gave up on me and passed me to her colleague. After trying to prove that I had done nothing wrong... and pleaded that I didn't have 700 baht, I actually thought he was going to say OK, that's fine... but NO!

He said you are one day out and  that will cost you 300 baht. At this point I had been explaining my situation for about 15 minutes or so. I was fed up and thought I'm not getting anywhere yer. So I paid 300 Baht and got my licence back.

One - Nil to the police I think!

Technically you where un taxed and uninsured on the day you where stopped so 300 baht was very cheap

Just bad luck.. but 300 bt is not something to worry about too much. But the police is in the right.. you were not insured on that day.. maybe if you had not used an agent and went to the land transportation office (major hassle) you would have won. I would have just accepted it.

At home, not having your tax displayed is enough to do you......even it's all paid up.

So you expected to not get fined...for breaking the law..?

As new owner you must pay the fine..

From his avatar we can assume the OP is Welsh. He doesn't have to display any form of tax disc, as with the rest of the U.K.

Hi Dotpoom,

You were correct up to about 10 months ago but the police and various other organisations have number plate recognition cameras now so the government did away with tax discs knowing full well that busy honest people will get sucked into the no tax scam because they no longer have a tax disc to display and remind them to renew and will pay a fine even when they can prove that they ALWAYS tax their vehicles and just happened to un-intentionally forget this time

it's just another dishonest scam by the governments much like the very very expensive 090 telephone numbers you have to use when you need to call a government department.

Anyway for those who need to know, you no longer get a tax disc to display.

Nor do you in Thailand on a motorcycle. So why is that relevant?

If I chose to use a go-between to do this type of thing, I would not expect my situation to be legal the moment I employed him.

You are supposed to display the tax disc on a motorcycle in Thailand.
Not under the seat as some people do..Mr policeman can cause problems for you if he's feeling particularly officious that day.
