Leap seen in ‘ease of doing business’

BANGKOK: -- DEPUTY PRIME Minister Somkid Jatusripitak is confident that Thailand’s global ranking for the ease of doing business will leapfrog that of many other economies next year if the country continues to clear away stumbling blocks.

He made the remark yesterday in response to a World Bank report released on Wednesday, which sees Thailand’s ranking for the ease of doing business being upgraded three places to 46th.

Somkid added that the upgrade could influence the Kingdom’s competitiveness ranking, as rated by the IMD World Competitiveness Centre and the World Economic Forum.

Thailand is aiming high in improving many ways to boost the ease of doing business in the coming years, a senior Thai official said yesterday.

Yep, by clearing away "stumbling blocks" - such as any threat to the junta's dominance, any independent scrutiny, or any reporting of the actual truth...

More hot air. Let's see actual independent verifiable results rather than what one person "believes" to be true, especially when that "belief" flies in the face of what people actually see or experience.

Introducing an easy payment method might help.....

 

 

 

Somkid Jatusripitak: A blustering, pontificating Thai bureaucrat that probably does not know what his neighbors are doing.  Macao makes five times that of the Las Vegas strip.  Cambodia has already caught the attention of Macao casino operators, as there are no limits for Chinese traveling to Cambodia.  Malaysia is more affluent and foreign friendly.  Other neighbors are poised to move forward as well.  Thailand, not so much.

Whilst the military continue to "run" the country.. and this seems to be the case for many years to come, investors will be very wary.

An unpredictable government, managed in part by irrational and incompetent people, will never appear attractive, no matter how many laws/procedures are removed.....China excepted.

The upgrade was three places , such a quantum leap , one thing you notice about imposters in government they have a habit of twisting the truth, see if Thailand can get into the top five , then it would be worth gnashing those gums....................................

This ranking is not issued by the Thai government so you can expect it is no propaganda. Three steps is not much but going the right direction and there is still a lot to do reaching a good position.

I am hoping this is an early April fools joke....I have been a businessman for 6 years, and every year things get more and more complicated,to the point that my accountant is perplexed both with the tax system and more specifically with the constant changes in the visa and work permit system. I am not a bar or restaurant owner, and operate several offices and been in TH for 20+ years.

Yes but who does Thailand belong to now?
The U.S or the Chinese?
The Chinese shop is open but the west have no money to go shopping.

You do nothing, you simply a it or 3 there actions to do or services,  viola, our move past 3 places.

It's actually not problematic at all to run a business here. I don't know what family affairs problems are with all his offices.

The only thing is that I would rather own my business at 100% and not having to give away 51% of it to people who have not invested anything but are partners. 

It is actually quite amazing that a foreigner cannot own 100% of his business here. Apart from that, no major problems.

As far as rules and regulations are concerned they change once in a while in every country. I have had a business here for 12 years and there have not been any major changes in the process of renewing visa and work permit during all this time. 

And frankly all this talk about brown envelopes is not only boring but untrue. If you do things according to the rules and law you don't have to provide any brown envelopes to anyone. If your intention or mentality is to cheat then maybe you have to pay someone to get your bs passed.

As far as taxes are concerned the rates are ridiculous comparing to European countries. Here you pay a maximum of 750 baht in contribution for staff, in Europe apart from the fact that salaries are 5-10 times higher you pay 35 % on top for contributions. And the services people get for all this tax money they take from you are in no way at the level they should be considering the amounts the governments take from businesses. Corporate tax is 20% after deductions you can make. Income tax is what 10-15 percent net on a million baht salary.

Thailand ranks 46th in the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business report, up three spots from last year because of changes in the methodology, adding factors related to gender equality, protecting minority investors and paying taxes.

 

If the revised methods had been used last year, Thailand would have been ranked 46th, with no change this year.

 

So this is basically an accounting change, and Thailand is no better or worse than last year. It's worrisome that the economy czar can't seem to grasp this, or is simply telling lies.

 

Also, if they look back a few years, they should not be talking about this at all. What could have happened in 2014 to make them drop from 18th to 46th place?

If you dig into the raw scores, it isn't that Thailand is performing "worse" on any particular metric, it's that many other countries have improved whereas Thailand has stagnated / made no forward progress.
