BANGKOK: -- The commissioner of police Jakthip Chaijinda has said that critics of the monarchy in the country should leave Thailand.

And he said if they don't have the money to go he will pay for their air tickets himself, reports Kapook.

Jakthip said after a meeting at police HQ yesterday: "If they don't like it in Thailand then they should go and live abroad.

"And if they don't have money I shall personally pay for them to go. I would go into debt for the sake of the country," said a clearly irked commissioner replying to reporters questions on the matter.

Police gathering at HQ observed a period of silence in honor of the late monarch His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej before a three hour briefing began.

Much of the meeting centered on arrangements for the continuing royal ceremonies at the Grand Palace and the large numbers expected in the city on October 29th in particular.

Plans were also put in place for the next 100 days of mourning.

Jakthip told police, soldiers and other authorities that the prime minister and his deputy had asked him to convey their thanks for the great job they were doing in looking after the huge number of visitors to the capital.

He was asked about reports that some volunteer motorcyclists ferrying mourners for free had been chased out of the Sanam Luang area.

He said this was not true but he remarked that some people in the area were pretending to offer a free service but were in fact charging. These people would be moved on, he said.

He was then asked about critics of the monarch and lese majeste cases.

He said that representations were being made to foreign governments and forces about those criticizing the monarchy from afar but gave no specific details.

Then came his comments about critics within the country.
