BANGKOK, 29 October 2016, (NNT) - According to officials, a large number of residents are waiting to pay their last respects to the body of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej since the gate to the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace opened at 4AM today, the first day the public is permitted to do so.

The crowd was reportedly able to enter the throne hall without using the previously announced queue card system this morning.

Maj Gen Pongsawat Pannajit, deputy commander of the 1st army, said that the authorities have decided to temporary forego the system due mainly to the sheer number of visitors. He nonetheless asked mourners to wait in line in an orderly manner.

Groups of 140 visitors are allowed to enter the throne hall at a time.

The throne hall will be open to mourners to pay their respects from 8am to 9pm every day, but it will be closed to the public from time to time during royal merit-making ceremonies.
