Four Cambodians held hostage for almost five years by Somali pirates returned to the Kingdom yesterday after flying into Phnom Penh from Manila. Captain Bin Bunchhin, the deputy chief of the immigration police unit at Phnom Penh International Airport, said the men arrived yesterday and were taken to their homes.

“These four Cambodian fishermen were part of the crew of the Naham 3, which was hijacked by Somali pirates in March 2012,” he told Khmer Times yesterday. “They were held hostage by Somali pirates for five years. They now have been safely returned to their homes and are meeting with their families.”

Two fishermen returned to their homes in Kampong Chhnang province, one is from Kampong Cham province and the other is from Kratie province. All the men come from Cham Muslim communities. Chum Sounry, the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, told Khmer Times that when the four arrived, they were questioned by immigration police and International Organization for Migration officials as well as Foreign Ministry workers before being sent to the airport’s VIP section to await cars for their trip home.
