Reporters Nailed for Timber Story

Featured Replies

The Kampong Thom provincial court yesterday questioned three reporters in relation to a defamation suit after a supposedly false report about a local timber company. According to the warrants dated last Monday, prosecutor Ith Sothea summoned three reporters to appear in court yesterday, two from Reaksmey Ey San News and one from Cheat Khmer Tae Mouy News.

A total of four reporters were named in the defamation suit – Prak Tha from MSJTV, Pov Bunthorn from Cheat Khmer Tae Mouy News, Prak Radeth and Chin Morn from Reaksmey Ey San News – after they allegedly misreported 95 Company as having transported timber earlier this month. “We published that they were transporting timber, but they retaliated after it was published, so we later published a clarification and apologized for our report but they were not happy and filed a complaint demanding 220 million riel (about $55,000) in compensation,” MSJTV’s Mr. Tha, who was questioned last week, told Khmer Times.

He said he interviewed a taxi driver three weeks ago who said that he saw a 95 Company truck had broken down in Kampong Thom’s Sandan district. However, the taxi driver was unsure if the truck had been transporting rubber or timber.   He added that because he was busy, he called reporters from other news outlets asking if they had information on the truck. Additionally, when the group of reporters arrived at the scene, company officials refused to allow them anywhere near the truck which made them suspicious, thus the report that the truck’s cargo was indeed carrying timber.
