Farmers holding off harvesting and selling pending government assistance

BANGKOK: -- Farmers in several northeastern and northern provinces are now holding off harvesting and selling seasonal rice crops in response to the government's call and pending measures to help them fetching higher prices.

The sharp fall in rice price currently was partly blamed by the government as a political attempt to discredit the government

Government spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday such attempt was detected in Phichit province.

Local politicians have colluded with millers to suppress rice price sold to them by farmers in order to discredit the government, he said.

He said that normally only 10% of jasmine rice yields will be out in the market in October, 80% in November and the rest 10% in December.

As most rice yields have not yet out in the market, but how come news of sharp price fall was spread in advance, he said.

This indicated a collusion to confuse the public and to blame the government for solving the problem at wrong point, he said.

He said although investigation could not yet point to any particular people responsible for the price suppression, but the problem has surfaced in Phichit province.

Meanwhile farmers are holding off on harvesting and selling seasonal rice crops to wait the results of the government’s measures to tackle low market prices.

In Buriram, the majority of  farmers are delaying the harvesting and selling of seasonal rice crops after the government announced that it will be implementing measures to address low market prices.

This has caused activity at most rice mills and rice markets to trickle to almost a standstill.

The general consensus is that regular activity will resume once market prices for rice rises once again.

In expectation of this many farmers have taken the opportunity to sun-dry rice crops which they have already harvested to reduce the amount of moister content.

A good opportunity for end consumers to buy 100% jasmine rice, instead of those premixed with only 12-15%.

"The general consensus is that regular activity will resume once market prices for rice rises once again".

Who is General Concensus and which Department does he work within and how does he plan to manipulate the international rice market to make prices rise to a level that farmers would be satisfied with so they can "resume regular activity"?

Be careful what you wish for you could be left holding the rice bag on this one. Words are a dime a dozen actions priceless. Kind of reminds me of when I walk into a store to inquire about an item. Before I can even ask she has it wrapped up ready to go and her hand out for the money.

Brer Fox, I know General Consesnus very well, he is a good mate of mine, we usually go out for a beer together with General Apathy and General Stupidity.

You can see what is happening here can't you?

The farmers were being offered 5 Baht / Kg or 5000 Baht / Ton - not enough to cover costs.

Then it was rumoured the Government were going to support them with a price of 14000 Baht a ton, which is obviously quite a bit better.

The strange thing here is that they are prosecuting and fining Yingluck USD 1 Billion for doing virtually the same thing!!!

Hypocrites the lot of them. After they have creamed off their graft money from her 1 billion fine will they be using the remainder to subsidise the farmers? Using their goodwill and her money!

I don't see how end consumers get 12-15% Jasmine Rice?

All you need to do is buy the bags marked 100% Jasmine and you never get a problem. If however you go out and buy a 5kg bag of "Thai White Rice" then bigger fool you as this is not Jasmine and is not claimed to be Jasmine.

You just need to look at the grains in the bag and you can tell straight away if it is Jasmine or not.

Most Thais wouldn't feed "White Rice" to their pigs.

The current Gov. will have a hard time following Yingluck's footprints without losing some face A. First they must find out how her subsidies caused the lower price of rice I'm sure.

I disagree. The rice I harvested in 2012 and 2013 is much more fragrant than the so-called 100% jasmine. Also, the Thai rice that I tasted in Hong Kong and Singapore are also more fragrant than the said rice.

These guys are dumber than your average clown...

When I look at the long term rice price chart I can not help but have the feeling that the time of rice is history? The future of rough rice is below 10 US$ now...

I don't understand why brown rice is more expensive than white rice.  It takes less milling.

"Brown rice is the whole grain with just the first outer layer (husk or hull) removed through milling. It retains its fiber and germ which contains vital nutrients. White rice is brown rice that has been milled to remove the bran and much of the germ, reducing fiber and nutrient content drastically."

Seems like it should be cheaper...
